(The Independent )It’s the season of big tech launches, and Samsung is coming in hot and heavy off the heels of Apple’s Spring Loaded event, where its biggest rival announced a new iMac, a new iPad Pro and the much-rumoured AirTags.
Samsung is about to host its annual Galaxy Unpacked event later this week, where it will unveil what it calls “the most powerful Galaxy”. Galaxy what, though? We don’t know, but we’re expecting Samsung to reveal a Galaxy book pro laptop to rival the MacBook pro, and maybe even a new foldable phone.
But with big shiny tech launches, we often get the inevitable big price drop on existing products. This time it’s Samsung’s powerful S20 ultra handset. Ahead of Samsung Galaxy Unpacked, Amazon has reduced the flagship device released a little over a year ago to just £695.99.
That’s a massive 42 per cent saving, giving you £503 off the Galaxy S20 ultra’s usual price of £1,199. While we’re not expecting to see any new phones at Galaxy Unpacked considering we just got a new Galaxy S21 ultra, the big Amazon drop is giving us a morsel of hope.

Samsung Galaxy S20 ultra: Was £1,099, now £695.99, Amazon.co.uk
The Samsung Galaxy S20 ultra was the company’s 2020 flagship smartphone, so we knew it was going to be a beast of a device. It was one of the first flagship phones to include 5G as standard, rather than as an expensive add-on.
It has a ginormous 6.9in QHD+ display with a 120Hz refresh rate – bettering the iPhone 12 pro max’s sluggish 60Hz refresh rate. And there’s a bit of heft to the S20 ultra as well, weighing 220g and 76mm wide.
On specs alone, the rear cameras seems to be a standout. There’s a 48-megapixel telephoto camera; a 108-megapixel wide camera and an incredibly detailed space zoom up to 100x. The camera array can also shoot 8K video, which is a nice bonus. On the front, you’ll get a beefy 40-megapixel camera that can capture all your blemishes. Lovely.
On top of that, the S20 ultra has a juicy 5,000mAh battery that will last you a solid day of heavy use. The battery also adjusts to your phone usage, learning how and when you charge. There’s also a nice 12GB of RAM available, and the phone runs on the snappy Exynos 990 processor. With the S20 ultra, you get 128GB worth of storage and this can be boosted to 1.5TB if you need that much.
