$44 million project to bring bourbon facility, rickhouses to Shelbyville

A $44 million project that will bring seven new bourbon rickhouses, along with a blending and bottling facility, to Shelby County is now underway.

Each new rickhouse has the capacity to store 20,000 barrels, according to a release from the Koetter Group, a Kentuckiana contracting group constructing the project. Koetter is working in tandem with Louisville-based The Spirits Group, and the two will collaborate on The Blending House, a 30,000-square-foot blending and bottling facility expected to open in fall 2024.

“We are delighted that the Koetter Group has chosen to bring this $44,000,000 investment to Shelby County, as we continue to make Shelby County a premiere Kentucky Bourbon destination,” said the county's Judge Executive Dan Ison.

Construction of the first facility is complete, according to the release. The second rickhouse is expected to be complete Sept. 2023 and a third in Feb. 2024.

Koetter developed the K-RAX Premium Barrel Storage System after "several distilleries to help them create an innovative way to store and age premium spirits," the release reads.

"K-RAX is focused on operational safety enhancements and providing improved structural integrity and improved airflow," CEO Bob Koetter said.

The Blending House will also offer space to third-party clients with "high volume needs," the release reads.
