44-year-old man who barricaded self into ex-wife’s Arab apartment in custody

ARAB, Ala. (WHNT) — Authorities say a suspect who forced his way into and barricaded himself inside his ex-wife’s Arab apartment on Tuesday morning is now in custody.

According to Police Chief Shane Washburn, the Arab Police Department responded to a call around 8:11 a.m. at Brandywine Apartments. Washburn said Joel Lee Brown, 44, of Guntersville forced himself into his ex-wife’s apartment.

The ex-wife was able to escape after a short time and is safe, but Washburn said Brown barricaded himself in the apartment. As of 2:25 p.m., Washburn told News 19 that Brown was in custody and was being taken to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office on felony warrants.

Marshall County Sheriff Phil Sims said a fire started in the room Brown was barricaded in, and when it started he came outside and gave himself up. Sims says the cause of the fire is still unknown at this time.

SWAT and the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office, along with a number of other agencies, also responded to the scene.

Brown had felony probation warrants through the sheriff’s office, Sims said.

No one was injured during the response, he added.
