Baldwin County Fire Chief Vincent Young said the fire started Wednesday around 10:30 p.m. at a home on Sparta Highway.

When they arrived, the fire had taken completely over the home.

As crews were working to extinguish the fire, a family member told fire officials William Mitchum was still in the home. Chief Young says Mitchum had run back into the home to rescue the family’s pet dog.

“That’s just the type of guy he was,” Chief Young told Channel 2 Action News.

The fire chief said last year that Mitchum’s daughter fell into a well last Easter, so he went down into the well to rescue her.

Officials found Mitchum dead near the front door of the home. Chief Young could not confirm if the dog died in the fire but says they have not found the dog.

No one else was injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
