(KRON) — The San Francisco 49ers suffered a heartbreaking loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in a 25-22 overtime thriller in Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas Sunday night.

The Chiefs tied the game with a field goal at the end of regulation and won the game with a touchdown in overtime. With the win, the Chiefs have won back-to-back Super Bowl titles.

In overtime, San Francisco caught two breaks in its first possession — but it wasn’t enough to stop defending champion Kansas City Chiefs.

49ers quarterback Brock Purdy nearly threw an interception on first down. Two plays later, Purdy nearly lost a fumble that was then deemed an incomplete pass. However, the 49ers caught a break when the Chiefs were called for a defensive holding penalty, giving them the automatic first down to keep the drive alive. San Francisco would later score a field goal to give them a 22-19 lead.

The breaks weren’t enough to stop the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs. Mahomes wins his third Super Bowl to go along with three Super Bowl MVPs.

San Francisco had a chance to score a touchdown but instead settled for an overtime field goal. Purdy missed wide receiver Jauan Jennings on a 3rd and 4 that could have scored six.

“I was trying to get the ball to (Jennings),” Purdy said. “That’s what was hurting me just knowing that yeah we’re gonna execute the field goal, trusting Jake (Moody) and all the guys on special teams, but obviously (the Chiefs’) offense is really good. Mahomes is really good.

“We just don’t want to give them an opportunity to go down and win the game off a touchdown. When I wasn’t able to connect with him, it hurt.”
