5.4 earthquake off coast near Homer shakes Southcentral Alaska

Mar. 19—A magnitude 5.4 earthquake shook the Kenai Peninsula and other parts of Southcentral Alaska early Sunday morning.

The quake, which occurred at 7:06 a.m., was centered about 13 miles west of Homer, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, in the waters near where Cook Inlet and Kachemak Bay meet.

It occurred at a depth of 40.6 miles, based on information from the Alaska Earthquake Center, and was felt widely throughout the Kenai and as far away as Anchorage and the Mat-Su.

No tsunami was expected, according to the National Tsunami Warning Center.
