In search of a new favorite Mexican spot?
Hoodline crunched the numbers to find the top Mexican eateries around San Francisco, using both Yelp data and our own secret sauce to produce a ranked list of where to satisfy your cravings.
1. Puerto Alegre
Topping the list is Puerto Alegre. Located at 546 Valencia St. (between 16th and 17th streets) in the Mission, the traditional Mexican spot — serving favorites like tacos, burritos, enchiladas, pozole and margaritas — is the most popular Mexican restaurant in San Francisco, boasting four stars out of 1,070 reviews on Yelp.
2. El Tomate Restaurant
Next up is El Tomate Restaurant, also in the Mission, at 2904 24th St. (between Florida and Alabama streets). With 4.5 stars out of 85 reviews on Yelp, the Tex-Mex spot has proven to be a local favorite. Stop in for fajitas and crispy tacos or for Mexican brunch fare like huevos rancheros and chilaquiles. El Tomate Restaurant serves brunch daily.
Garaje, a Mexican gastropub in SoMa, is another much-loved go-to, with 4.5 stars out of 1,509 Yelp reviews. On the menu, you'll find tacos with seared wild ahi and fiery Thai prawns, as well as zapatos — pressed burritos filled with such proteins as pork shoulder, skirt steak and crispy crab cake. 4. La Taqueria
Over in the Mission, check out La Taqueria, which has earned four stars out of 3,922 reviews on Yelp. You can find the counter-service taqueria — serving up authentic carnitas, lengua and cabeza tacos — at 2889 Mission St. (between 24th and 25th streets).
5. Nick's Crispy Tacos
Last but not least, there's Nick's Crispy Tacos, a Russian Hill favorite with four stars out of 3,278 reviews. Stop by 1500 Broadway (between Polk Street and Van Ness Avenue) to hit up the sports bar and Mexican restaurant, which offers tacos, burritos and quesadillas, the next time the urge strikes.
