From Country Living

Are you looking to adopt a calm dog to suit your easy-going lifestyle? We asked the experts at the Kennel Club to recommend the dog breeds that are commonly known for having a calm and laid-back temperament.

There are many benefits to having a more relaxed, low-maintenance dog. They are great for:

  • Owners who live with young children or seniors

  • Owners who don't have much experience with dogs

  • Owners with laid-back personalities themselves

  • Owners with multiples responsibilities

But the Kennel Club remind us that "individual dogs have individual and varying traits and there are many other factors which can shape a dog's character and temperament." This means that, although the below breed are more likely to be calm, it's all about assessing hoe the individual animal will fit your life.

Before you adopt a dog, remember...

  • Every dog is different

  • If you are unsure, check with the pet adoption shelter about the best breed for you

  • Don't expect to contact a rescue organisation and get a dog immediately – they will need to check your suitability to own a dog including your home, garden, and work commitments

  • Remember, your new dog may be stressed, worried and uncertain of you and their new surroundings – ensure you give your new dog time to adjust

  • By taking on a rescued dog, you will be taking on their past too, and this could be an unhappy past – make sure you show plenty of love and affection
