5 college homecoming celebrations in or near Sioux Falls, from Dakota Days to Hobo Days

It’s homecoming season.

Whether you want to relive your college days, or simply get into Sioux Falls’ hometown spirit and camaraderie, you can do that by visiting the two private colleges located in Sioux Falls or driving less than an hour to one of the nearest three public colleges.

Here’s a comprehensive list of five college homecomings in the area, where you can get a sense of the spirit of the Trojans, Cougars, Vikings, Coyotes or Jackrabbits this fall.

Dakota State University — Trojan Days

When: Sept. 19 - 24

What to do on Sept. 24:

  • 10 a.m. Trojan Days Parade on Egan Avenue

  • 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Trojan Zone

  • Tailgate before the football game east of Trojan Field, with yard games at noon and a DSU Strongman Competition at 1 p.m.

  • 4 p.m. Trojan Football vs. Iowa Wesleyan University

University of Sioux Falls — Cougar Days

When: Sept. 23 - 25

What to do on Sept. 24:

  • 8:30 - 10 a.m. Cougar Days 5K Run/Walk at Cherry Rock Park

  • 10 - 11 a.m. Morning Yoga at the Jeschke Patio

  • Campus tours

  • 11 a.m. Tailgate and Family Carnival at the USF Sports Complex, with food trucks, inflatables, lawn games and more.

  • 1 p.m. Football vs. Minnesota Duluth

  • 8 - 10 p.m. USF’s Got Talent at the Jeschke Fine Arts Center and Meredith Auditorium

Other events for Cougar Days include historical campus tours, an outdoor band concert, a homecoming cornhole tournament, art receptions and more.

Augustana University — Viking Days

When: Oct. 10 - 16

What to do Oct. 15:

  • 10:30 a.m. Viking Days Parade from University Place (formerly 28th Street) to 33rd Street on Grange Avenue

  • 11 a.m. Viking Tailgate

  • 1 p.m. Vikings Football vs. Wayne State at the Kirkeby-Over Stadium

  • 5 p.m. Volleyball vs. University of Mary at the Elmen Center

  • 8 p.m. Denham, a South Dakota hip hop and R&B artist, performs in the Back Alley at Morrison Commons

University of South Dakota — Dakota Days

South Dakota State University — Hobo Days

  • 9:30 a.m. Hobo Day Parade on Medary Avenue in Downtown Brookings

  • 2 p.m. Football vs. Indiana State Sycamores kicks off

  • 7 p.m. Hobo Night Live at Volstorff Ballroom: Play games, win prizes and attend a comedy show (8:30 p.m.) and more.

Other unique campus events include the One Month Club, Hobo Gear Prep Night, Bum-a-Meal, BumFire, Bum Over and Rally at the Rails.
