After 5-day closure, Indian Canyon Drive reopens through wash in Palm Springs

The Palm Springs Police Department reopened Indian Canyon Drive through the Whitewater Wash on Saturday afternoon. And for a change, it looks like the oft-closed stretch could actually stay open for at least a few days.

The roughly two miles from around the Palm Springs Amtrak stop into the city was closed again Monday because of blowing sand. And after rain Tuesday caused flooding, it stayed that way for several days, even after Gene Autry Trail and Vista Chino both reopened through the wash late in the week.

The flooding was the result of runoff from the storm that drenched the San Jacinto and San Bernardino mountains.

However, the recent string of closures may be coming to an end as a wet winter and early spring in the Coachella Valley wind down. The next several days are expected to be sunny and dry, with highs in the upper 60s and 70s in Palm Springs and upper 40s and 50s in Idyllwild. There is a chance of rain in the valley and snow in the mountains, however, on Wednesday and Thursday.
