5 displaced after apartment catches on fire near 35th Avenue, Van Buren Street

Five people were displaced after a fire started in an apartment complex on West Melvin Street near 35th Avenue and Van Buren Street on Thursday.

According to the Phoenix Fire Department, it was a structural fire that erupted on the second story around 7:30 p.m.

The flames were controlled by fire crews with hose lines. Everyone got out of the building safely, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Those who were displaced are being assisted by the Crisis Response Team.

The department said that a ladder company evaluated the roof of the building and determined that there was no fire in the attic space.

As of Thursday evening, the cause of the fire was under investigation.
