5 Douglas County supervisors won't seek reelection

Dec. 22—SUPERIOR — Five County Board supervisors are planning to step down in April.

In Superior, Ron Leino of the 6th District and Richard Staupe of the 11th District have filed notifications of noncandidacy for the upcoming April 2 election. And Patricia Ryan of the 14th District; Jim Borgeson of the 20th District; and Mary Lou Bergman of the 21st, who represent towns and villages in Douglas County, have decided not to run for reelection.

So far, only one candidate has stepped up to fill the vacancy that will be left by Ryan, said County Clerk Kaci Lundgren.

John Lohse of East Burning Tree Road has declared his candidacy to represent residents in the villages of Oliver and Superior, and the western three-fourths of the Town of Superior.

However, no one is running to represent two districts in the city, and the village of Lake Nebagamon and towns of Dairyland, Gordon, Highland, eastern Solon Springs, southern Summit and Wascott.

"You could serve your community and be elected," Lundgren said.

Nomination papers are due by 5 p.m. Jan. 2.

The Superior School Board is facing a similar situation. Three open seats are on the spring ballot, all of which were held by board members who resigned during 2023. The board appointed members to serve the remainder of the term for two of the seats and left the third open. According to the district office, only two people have filed nomination papers for the three seats. Nomination papers are also due by 5 p.m. Jan. 2.
