5 New England hotels named among top 100 in world

New Englanders don’t have to travel far at all to vacation at some of the very best hotels in the world.

Travel + Leisure readers named five hotels, including three in Massachusetts, among the top 100 in the world for 2023.

The publication on Tuesday released “World’s Best Awards,” a survey in which nearly 165,000 readers were asked to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe and to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more.

The top 100 hotels were specifically rated on the following criteria, according to T + L:

  • Rooms/facilities

  • Location

  • Service

  • Food

  • Value

For each characteristic, readers were allowed to choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores given to the hotels in this ranking were averages of all the responses.

The top-rated New England hotel was Quisisana Resort in Lovell, Maine, checking in at 22nd on the list with a reader score of 98.38.

“This isn’t just any New England getaway: staff stage a rotation of musical and theatrical performances throughout the week,” T + L wrote of the resort.

The Newbury Boston in Boston checked in at 52nd on the list with a reader score of 97.71.

“Its 286 rooms and suites feature custom artwork and furniture; the rooftop Contessa, from New York’s Major Food Group, has been an instant hit,” T + L wrote of the hotel.

The Wauwinet in Nantucket ranked 72nd on the list with a reader score of 97.20.

“This Nantucket classic overlooks Nantucket Harbor and the sea-grass-covered shore,” T+L wrote. “The 32-key retreat was built in 1860; it’s now a member of Relais & Chateaux and home to one of the island’s best restaurants, Topper’s.”

The Candleberry Inn in Brewster was the final Massachusetts hotel to make the list, ranking 75th with a reader score of 97.17.

“Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this classic Cape Cod B&B has nine rooms and suites spread across a main building — a former residence with parts dating to the late 18th century — and adjacent carriage house,” T+L wrote. “Readers have taken note, with one saying ‘the historic inn has been renovated with exquisite attention to detail.’”

New Hampshire was also represented on the list with Pickering House Inn in Wolfeboro checking in at 86th and earning a reader score of 97.00.

“Readers love the family-owned inn, which opened in 2018 inside a 19th-century Wolfeboro residence, for its small-town charm and prime location just a few blocks from Lake Winnipesaukee,” T+L wrote.

The Four Seasons Hotel Istanbul at Sultanahmet in Istanbul, Turkey, was rated the best hotel in the world.
