5 injured in fiery head-on crash in Amarillo; alcohol believed to be a factor

Five people were injured, one with life-threatening injuries, after a head-on collision in Amarillo Friday night that ended with the one of the two vehicles catching fire.

According to reports, at 8:25 p.m. Friday, officers from the Amarillo Police Department (APD) were called out to a head-on crash at southeast 3rd Avenue and Ross Street. Upon arrival, officers located a 2021 Toyota Tundra and a 2017 Nissan Altima in the 100 block of South Ross Street on the overpass.

The Altima caught fire and the 32-year-old female driver, who was the sole occupant, was removed by witnesses and officers. The driver was then taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Tundra, a 40-year-old man, along with the three passengers, a 36-year-old woman, 9-year-old boy, and 4-year-old girl, were taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Witnesses reported the Tundra was traveling northbound on Ross Street while the Altima was heading southbound on Ross Street. According to reports, the Altima left its lane, colliding head-on with the Tundra.

Alcohol is believed to be a factor in this crash.

APD wants to remind the public that driving while intoxicated continues to be an ongoing issue in the Amarillo area. There is no reason to get behind the wheel while intoxicated; it's not worth your life or the innocent lives of others.

This incident remains under investigation by the APD traffic unit.
