5 Jersey Shore spots to order your Super Bowl chicken wings

Is a Super Bowl party even a Super Bowl party without chicken wings?

We think not.

The combination is one of our favorites, but we wondered — how did it happen?

It seems the pairing came about after sports bars, which favored wings because they were affordable at the time, began opening across the country in the 1980s. Then came the Buffalo Bills' four 1990s Super Bowl appearances, which brought national attention to the New York-born Buffalo wing.

Decades later, Americans eat more than 1 billion chicken wings each Super Bowl Sunday.

If you want to enjoy them but don't want to cook them, these restaurants will do the dry-rubbing, smoking, frying and saucing for you.

The Galley Pizza & Eatery, Asbury Park

This restaurant is known for its crispy and pan pizzas, chicken vodka parmesan sandwich on cheesy garlic bread, and house-smoked prime rib cheesesteaks. But owner Kris Black's smoked chicken wings are some of the best around.

He starts with Bell & Evans chicken, which is rubbed with spices, smoked, crisped on the grill, and tossed in either housemade Buffalo sauce or chili pepper-infused Mike's Hot Honey. Go ahead and get them both, then thank us later.

Go: Bone-in wings are available in orders of 50, 100 and 200; boneless wings come in orders of 40 and 80. Advance ordering is required. 1313 Memorial Drive; 732-775-7711, thegalleyasbury.com.

In the last year, this spot has become locally famous for serving a menu of just two things: wings and fries.

G Wings 22 offer four flavors: tried and true Buffalo (with just the slightest kick); an interesting honey sriracha blend; classic barbecue; and a honey mustard that is palatable for even the most sensitive of stomachs (everything is gluten-free, except the fries).

The restaurant will be closed for in-house and other takeout orders on Super Bowl Sunday.

Go: Catering orders, at a minimum of 30 wings ($45), must be placed by Thursday, Feb. 9, or when designated time slots run out, whichever comes first. You can also order 100 wings for $150, or any other combination over the minimum. 175 Monmouth Road; 732-483-6279, gwings22.com.

If sauces are your thing, Harry Clayton is your man.

The chicken wings made on his bright-orange food trailer — "We smoke our wings and then deep-fry them," — come with your choice of more than half a dozen sauces. There's barbecue, Carolina Gold (mustard and vinegar-based), sweet chili, sweet teriyaki, garlic parmesan, Buffalo, Nashville hot, bourbon, mango habanero, and jerk.

To order: Wings come in orders of 12, 18, 24, 50, 75, 100, or "as many as they want," Clayton said. Order by Wednesday, Feb. 8. 240 Dover Road; 848-223-9955, harryssmokinbbq.com.

Dunphy was finalizing his Super Bowl menu as of press time, but customers will be able to order wings that are smoked on his custom-made smoker, flash-fried to order, and flavored with dry rub or a housemade sauce: Buffalo, honey barbecue, Alabama white, honey sriracha, and Jersey Devil.
