5 local stores pay fines for overcharging customers

More local businesses are facing fines after being accused of overcharging customers.

The North Carolina Department of Agriculture fined five stores in Mecklenburg County. The Circle K on Matthews-Mint Hill Road paid $5,340 in fines, the Dollar General on West Sugar Creek Road paid $7,675, the Family Dollar on Old Statesville Road paid $20,000 while other Family Dollar paid $10,000. The Target in University City paid $8,370.

Stores face fines from the Department of Agriculture when it finds an error rate of 2% or more. Stores are re-inspected every two months. A total of 37 stores across 22 counties in the state faced fines.

In December, several stores also faced fines for overcharging. In August, Channel 9 reported on several other Charlotte area stores that had also overcharged customers, including Target and Walmart stores. The agency stated that 61 North Carolina stores were ordered to pay fines for price-scanning errors in 32 counties.

In July, several Dollar General and Walmart stores in Iredell and Union counties were accused of overcharging customers.
