5 Mass., 2 NH cities ranked best places to live in the Northeast

Looking to get away to another city for the weekend, but don’t want to leave the Northeast?

5 Massachusetts and 2 New Hampshire cities have been ranked as the best places to live in the Northeast.

According to a list put together by Livability, each city on the list has something different to offer which makes it special.

Just outside Boston, Quincy, Mass was named after Col. John Quincy, the great-grandfather of former president John Quincy Adams. According to Livability, “the city maintains much of that historic charm while keeping a firm eye toward the future as one of the best places to live in the Northeast.”

In Quincy, you’ll find dozens of historic landmarks, a thriving arts scene, tasty American and international cuisine, a collection of bars and pubs, and 27 miles of a gorgeous coastline.

Worcester, Mass just celebrated its tricentennial, and the “Heart of the Commonwealth” makes 300 years young look good.

According to the list, “Worcester is an affordable and diverse city with sound transportation infrastructure, including a commuter rail that zips back and forth to Boston and an ultra-walkable downtown.”

Worcester has a lot of restaurants and is also home to the Hanover Theatre which is perfect for catching a Broadway show.

Just 30 minutes away from downtown Boston, is Framingham, Mass. Home to the Framingham Heart Study, which has been ongoing for nearly 75 years, Framingham was founded in the 1700′s and has nearly 300 historic homes. Downtown Framingham features a variety of charming shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions.

Lowell, Mass is located just 30 miles north of Boston, making this city of 115,000 an excellent choice for professionals who work in the city but prefer the pace of a mid-sized town. According to Livability, “The city has several parks and natural areas, including the Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsboro State Forest and the Merrimack River, offering nature lovers a chance to enjoy hiking, biking, and other outdoor activities.”

Best known for being the best place to visit during the Halloween season, Salem offers a mix of history, recreation, and a comfortable climate. Visit The Salem Witch Museum and the House of Seven Gables for some history, explore the hundreds of shops and restaurants, or take a boat tour to explore the Salem Sound.

In New Hampshire, Nashua is known for its art scene is bursting with creativity while Portsmouth is a “highly walkable city with great restaurants, fresh seafood, beautiful architecture, historical attractions, boutique shopping, and a thriving arts scene.”

Portland, Maine, Warwick and Newport, Rhode Island, West Hartford, Connecticut, and Burlington, Vermont were among other New England states that made the list.
