5-year-old dies after self-inflicted gunshot, 4 detained

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Four people were detained after a 5-year-old died due to a self-inflicted gunshot at an apartment complex in East Memphis Friday morning.

Memphis Police say at around 4:35 a.m., officers responded to a shooting in the 1300 block of Walnut Hall Ct. at the Legacy Lynfield Apartments.

A 5-year-old male victim was located and transported to LeBonheur in critical condition. He succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.

Police say they detained four people as they collected evidence for several hours, trying to figure out what exactly led to this tragedy.

Preliminary information indicates this is accidental and self-inflicted.

Trauma medical doctor Regan Williams told us in a recent interview, there are more and more children being treated for gunshot wounds.

In fact, last year Le Bonheur reported 10 children were killed and another 168 were wounded by guns, a 19% increase over the year before.

“We have a lot of quadriplegic or paraplegic children from gunshot wounds this year,” Williams said.
