5-year-old getting haircut is killed when someone opens fire on home, Alabama cops say

A 5-year-old boy was visiting a home in Alabama to get his hair cut when he was shot and killed, police said.

The Jefferson County coroner identified him as Brandon Jamal Nation III.

The barber was also shot and is currently in stable condition, Det. Justin Burmeister with the Bessemer Police Department told McClatchy News.

A family member had brought Nation to the home for a haircut the morning of Jan. 7, Burmeister said. The boy and the barber were on the front porch at around 10:15 a.m. when multiple people approached the home on foot.

Someone opened fire, wounding the two of them. Others were at the home but were not injured, according to Burmeister.

Nation was rushed to a children’s hospital in Birmingham, where he died of his injuries a little over two hours after the shooting, the coroner said.

Bessemer police are investigating and have questioned two people so far, Burmeister told McClatchy News. The motive for the shooting is unknown at this time, and no arrests have been made as of Jan. 8.

The 5-year-old was a resident of nearby Fairfield.

“Our prayers and condolences are offered to the family of Brandon Jamal Nation, III,” Fairfield mayor Eddie Penny wrote on Facebook.

Family members expressed outrage over the shooting while Nation was getting his hair cut and said they were “numb” in the wake of his death.

“My baby is gone,” Nation’s grandmother wrote on Facebook. “My heart is not beating right.”

Bessemer and Fairfield are part of the Birmingham metropolitan area.
