5 people injured in crash involving occupied ambulance in north Phoenix

Five people were hospitalized following a crash involving an ambulance transporting a patient with a gunshot wound in north Phoenix early on Monday morning.

Firefighters were dispatched to the area of 7th Street and Northern Avenue around 2:15 a.m. after receiving reports of a multi-vehicle accident, according to the Phoenix Fire Department.

Fire crews found an ambulance on its side and another vehicle at the site of the crash. The ambulance was transporting a patient with a gunshot wound to the hospital, according to the fire department. The patient was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

Three more patients, including a man who had to be extricated from the other car, were also immediately hospitalized in critical condition, the fire department said.

All the people in critical condition included a 17-year-old teenager, a man in his 20s, a woman in her 40s and a man in his 70s, the fire department said. Another man in his 30s was also taken to the hospital in stable condition.

Northern Avenue was closed at 7th Street on Monday. There was no estimated time of reopening.
