5 reasons why the Houston Texans is the best fit for Bryce Young

Former Alabama quarterback Bryce Young is expected to be a Day 1 starter in the league, but for which team? The 2023 NFL draft will give us all an answer rather quickly.

Currently, the Carolina Panthers have the No. 1 overall pick after trading with the Chicago Bears, but the Houston Texans loom at No. 2 overall Both the Panthers and the Texans are in need of finding a franchise quarterback.

Young is considered by many to be worthy of the first overall pick, but others argue that Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud will be the first player off the board.

Here are five reasons why being selected second overall to Houston would be the best thing to happen to Bryce Young.

DeMeco Ryans

A young, first-year head coach that played college football at Alabama? Sounds perfect. In an age where players have more say than ever before, a strong connection between a head coach and a quarterback is crucial to the success of a team. Young and Ryans would be able to experience being at the helm of a team at the same time together. Growing in their respective roles alongside one another isn’t something that can be qualified, but felt.

Young and John Metchie III were a stellar duo in the 2021 college football season. He had 96 receptions for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns with Young as his quarterback and that was with first-round wide receiver Jameson Williams on the field putting up WR1 numbers too. Metchie wasn’t able to play in 2022 due to a leukemia diagnosis. If Metchie is able to play in 2022, what better way to welcome him back to the field than to have Young throwing him passes again.

Oh, not to mention, Young has already discussed the possibility of reuniting with him during the draft process.

A wide open division

The AFC South is up for grabs. The Jaguars have Trevor Lawrence, who has shown flashes of his old Clemson self; the Titans have Ryan Tannehill and the Colts don’t have a set starter. In fact, the Colts may also be in on selecting Young if the opportunity becomes available. Being selected early in the draft means one of two things: a team with a poor enough record held on to the early draft pick or that a solid team traded up to get you. In this case, it’s the former. If he’s going to be on a team that’s not expected to make a run at the Super Bowl, at least have it be in a division that wouldn’t make it all too hard to compete in.

Along with new head coach DeMeco Ryans comes a first-year offensive coordinator, as well. Bobby Slowik joins the team as a relatively unknown name, but is expected to run an offense that has taken the NFL by storm. Texans Wire’s John Crumpler writes,

“The projected offensive system, from the Shanahan and Gary Kubiak tree, is one that’s been widely celebrated around the league. Former Shanahan protege and current Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel implemented the system with quarterback Tua Tagovailoa this year and made the playoffs in their initial campaign.”

Young appears to be a nearly perfect NFL draft prospect with respect to his on-field performance. The only flaw analysts discuss when it comes to Young is his size. Well, Ryans spoke publicly about Young’s height and weight and that it doesn’t bother him because he’s seen what Young can do. As this list started, a relationship between a coach and a quarterback is important. Having a coach defend the player from unnecessary scrutiny and outside noise leads to a confident player and a strong, trusting bond. Ryan has already proven he can do that for and with Bryce Young.
