5 Round Rock restaurants failed health inspections in May

Five Round Rock restaurants failed their health inspection in May, according to reports from the Williamson County and Cities Health District.

Chokdee Thai Cuisine of Round Rock at 311 University Blvd., Cracker Barrel Old Country Store #17 at 2350 Interstate 35 North, the Court at Round Rock at 2700 Sunrise Road, Pho Dan at 2711 La Frontera Blvd., and Razzoo's Cajun Cafe at 201 University Oaks Blvd. #1300 failed their routine health inspection in May.

Razzoo's Cajun Cafe closed for two days after failing its second health inspection within the past 12 months.

A restaurant fails a health inspection if it receives a score of 30 points or more. Each infraction is scored differently. The first failed inspection includes a follow-up within the next 45 days by the county health district that restaurants either pass or fail. Any restaurants that have failed an inspection twice within 12 months are forced to close for two days and to pay a fine.

Chokdee Thai Cuisine and Cracker Barrel received a score of 37. The Court at Round Rock received a score of 36 and Razzoo's Cajun Cafe received a score of 40. Pho Dan received a score of 48 during a routine inspection and a 34 on a compliance inspection.

Both Razzoo's Cajun Cafe and Pho Dan have passed their follow-up inspections, the district reported.

All restaurants are currently open.

Chuy's restaurant and the Bamboo Garden, which failed their inspections in April, passed their follow-ups with a score of 27 and 21, respectively.

Chokdee Thai Cuisine

The inspector report said Chokdee did not properly store, cool, heat or maintain its food. It also said employees were not properly washing their hands between tasks while handling food. Employees also were handling food with their bare hands.

Additionally, not all staff had their food handler cards available and the rear door to the kitchen did not have a seal to prevent pest entry.

On May 12, the restaurant passed its follow-up inspection with a score of 16.

Restaurant management did not respond to a request for a comment.

Cracker Barrel

Cracker Barrel violations included foods not being held at proper temperatures, not properly labeled and not properly stored, according to the inspector's report. The restaurant also had an expired food permit.

The restaurant had multiple employee violations, including employees not wearing gloves after handling raw material, employees not washing hands between tasks and not using soap to wash hands.

Management for the restaurant did not respond to a request for comment.

Court at Round Rock

According to the inspection report, the Court at Round Rock, a restaurant in a senior living facility, failed its inspection due to improper storage of raw food and food storage being contaminated.

The inspector also found that the hand sinks employees use do not drain and leak onto the floor. Employees also were not washing their hands or using gloves between tasks. Additionally, the restaurant was operating without a change of ownership permit.

Fruit flies also were seen near the dishware wash area and dry good storage, according to the report.

Staff from the restaurant said management were not available for an interview.

Pho Dan

Pho Dan failed both a routine and compliance inspection. On May 26, the restaurant passed its follow-up inspection with a score of 16.

The restaurant failed its initial inspection due to multiple employee violations, including employees handling raw meat without gloves, not washing their hands before handling utensils, not washing their hands when handling raw meat or after stepping in and out of the restaurant. Employees also were not washing their hands properly.

The restaurant also had multiple sinks not working and its menu also did not indicate which items are served raw or undercooked.

On the second inspection the restaurant employees committed the same violations, the report said.

While the restaurant passed its inspection on May 26, the report notes that the inside of the ice machine was stained with a black substance, a repeat violation from previous inspections.

Management for the restaurant did not respond to request for comment.

Razzoo's Cajun Cafe

This was the second time in 12 months the restaurant failed a health inspection, leading to a two-day closure between May 22 and May 24. On May 24, the restaurant passed its follow-up inspection with a score of 18.

Violations that resulted in a failure included storing raw food above cooked food, food being served past its expiration date, restaurant machinery being visibly dirty and food being improperly marked.

Employees also were not washing hands, removing gloves between tasks and touching food with their bare hands, the report said.

For the second inspection, the report shows that the restaurant corrected its violations. Any closures signs on the restaurant were removed and it has resumed operations.

The manager for the restaurant declined a request for comment.
