Bigfoot stomps around these 5 SC counties the most, alleged reports show

Are you a Bigfoot believer?

Maybe you’re just a fan of Bigfoot and other mythological, supernatural stories.

In any case, the legendary creature has been a nationwide phenomenon for decades and South Carolina is no exception. The Palmetto State even has its own annual South Carolina Bigfoot Festival in October, which celebrates all things Sasquatch and has grown in popularity.

According to the Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization, the urban legend has had 57 reported ‘sightings’ in South Carolina since as far back as 1964. The most recent reports were in 2022.

Bigfoot Field Researchers Organization is now the oldest and largest organization of its kind, the organization’s website states. It uses volunteers to conclude that a report is credible, noting that, “none of the modern reports in the BFRO’s online database are made public without some kind of investigation.”

Below are the five South Carolina with the most Bigfoot ‘sighting’ reports.

The most recent Bigfoot report in South Carolina was on Aug. 7, 2022 in Beaufort County. The report states that the Class A sighting was during the day in Hunting Island State Park on the Lighthouse exit road. The organization classifies and incident as a Class A sighting if it is seen “in circumstances where misinterpretations or misidentification of other animals can be ruled out with greater confidence,” the organization’s website states.

The August report notes that there were three witnesses to the incident.

“The creature was walking upright, taking strides quickly to our left, and disappeared into the bush on the left side of the road directly in front of us,” the report states. “We only witnessed the lower torso of the creature as its head and shoulders were hidden behind a pine tree and a palmetto stump on the left side of the road.”

The witnesses made their report to the Hunting Island State Park office.

One of the earliest recorded Bigfoot ‘sightings’ for South Carolina on the website was reported in Fort Jackson in Richland County in the fall of 1964. The report was made by a man in the U.S. Army on a training mission for escape and evasion.

The report states the man ended up alone in the woods at night with no moon. At one point, he came to a crossing of fire lanes and stopped to rest for a minute to get his bearings.

It was then that he heard something coming and thought it was another person.

“I waited until this thing (or maybe two things) was within a few steps of me, then I said ‘who goes there,’” the report states. “This thing went to its left in a flash … then I heard what sounded like someone talking backwards in a sort of growl.”

When he heard the thing coming toward him again, the man spoke once more and whatever it was took off running through the brush. The witness also ran off about half a mile until he luckily can upon a sergeant who had built a fire, the report states.
