5 sought in mass shooting at Phila. basketball court that left 3 dead

Aug. 13 (UPI) -- Police say they are seeking five suspects in connection with a mass shooting at a Philadelphia basketball court on Friday that left three men dead.

Authorities said Saturday that five people fired shots into a group who were gathered at a playground basketball court in North Philadelphia, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

A total of four people were shot in the incident, two of whom died on Friday, including a 22-year-old man and a 24-year-old man. A third victim, identified as 21-year-old man, was pronounced dead late on Saturday, police told KYW-TV.

The incident happened at around 6 p.m. Friday at the 8th and Diamond basketball courts in the city. Police said the shooters appeared to target the victims and that it was not a random act of violence.

At least 50 shell casings were recovered from the scene.

"I am horrified by the reports of a quadruple shooting tonight and praying for the victims as well as their families and loved ones," Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney said in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

He added that police "are investigating this senseless act of violence" and the city is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to arrests and convictions for any shootings near schools, recreation centers or libraries.
