5 South Mississippi restaurants fail health inspection, one for bugs or rodents present

Five restaurants inspected in mid-July across South Mississippi posted their first C for critical violations.

They include:

PJ’s Coffee, 117-A North Main St., Picayune, was inspected July 14 and had five critical violations:

Insects, rodents or animals present

Food contact surface not cleaned and sanitized

Plumbing not installed with proper backflow devices

Hands not clean and properly washed, which was corrected on site

Inadequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible, corrected on site

Every other inspection at the coffee shop dating back to 2014 scored an A.

Rasta Caribbean & Seafood Kitchen, 1732 Pass Road, Biloxi, was inspected July 20. It was cited for:

No certified manager

Food not separated and protected

Corrected during the inspection were:

Adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible

Proper cold holding temperatures

Proper date marking and disposition

Toxic substance property identified, stored and used

This was the first C dating back to 2020.

Yul’s Place, 530 Causeway Dr., Biloxi, was inspected July 18.

It was cited for improper cold holding temperatures, a repeat offense that previously was corrected on site.

Corrected on site was food separated and protected.

A follow-up inspection on July 20 showed no violations and the restaurant scored a B.

This is the first C dating back to 2020.

El Sabor Costeno, 220 Eisenhower Dr., Biloxi, was inspected July 13. It had seven violations, six of which were corrected during the inspection.

It was cited for sewage waste water not properly disposed.

Corrected during the inspection were:

Toxic substance property identified, stored and used

Proper cold holding temperatures

Proper date making and disposition

Food separated and protected

Adequate hand washing facilities supplied and accessible

Proper eating, tasting, drinking or tobacco use

This was the first C dating back to June 2022.

Grub Junkie, 5185 Main St., Lucedale, was inspected July 10. The bakery and coffeehouse was cited for improper cold holding temperatures.

Corrected during the inspection were:

Food contact surface cleaned and sanitized

Proper cooling time and temperatures

It was reinspected July 19 and given a B for no violations.

This is the first C dating back to July 2022.

Restaurants and other food service establishments in Mississippi are rated “A” if they pass the health department inspection, “B” if violations are corrected during the inspection, and “C” if the violations are critical.

Since July 8, there have been 125 restaurants in South Mississippi that scored an A for no violations and 37 that got a B when violations were corrected during the inspection.
