5 things to do in the Finger Lakes this week

Football is done. Now what?

Fortunately, all sorts of fun and informative events are on tap this week (and the following is a direct message to football fans who’ve been out of the loop the last few months: You can say that every week in Canandaigua and the rest of the Finger Lakes).

Here’s what’s happening this week.

1. Fill in the branches of your family tree at Wood Library

Are you just starting your family tree, or have you run into a brick wall tracing a distant ancestor? Learn how to conduct a basic search and use other helpful tools to find relatives as part of the Genealogy Club, which meets from 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 13, at Wood Library, 134 N. Main St., Canandaigua. All levels of experience are welcome. For details and to register for this or other Wood Library programs, visit woodlibrary.org or call 585-394-1381.

2. ‘Hallelujah’ for community theater

The Phelps-Clifton Springs Community Theatre always has something fun going on. “The Hallelujah Girls: A Righteously Funny Play” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, through Saturday, Feb. 17, with a matinee planned at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 18, at the Phelps Arts Center, 15 Church St., Phelps. Tickets are $15, which includes a $5 donation to the Phelps Arts Center. Seating is limited. Tickets are available at Phelps Hometown Pharmacy, Flowers by Sandy in Clifton Springs and Renaissance—The Goodie II Shoppe in Canandaigua. Follow on Facebook at Phelps-Clifton Springs Community Theatre and on Instagram at @PCSCT where online ticketing information is available.

3. Fire & Ice Winter Festival in Canandaigua

Downtown Canandaigua’s homage to the winter season kicks off at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, and continues throughout the day Sunday, Feb. 18. Ice sculptures throughout the district will be sponsored by local businesses and lit for evening viewings before and after dining in one of the downtown restaurants and breweries. Events include the Warm Beverage Trail, Chef Chili Cookoff Challenge, horse and wagon rides, fireman experience, ice-carving competition, frozen T-shirt contest, speed carving competition, ice carving and chef's challenge awards. Plenty more activities await visitors.

4. Did someone say, antiques? Yes, in Canandaigua

The Canandaigua Classic Antique Show and Sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 18 at Hotel Canandaigua, 205 Lakeshore Drive, Canandaigua. In addition to checking out all the antiques, find out more about one of your own relics from 9 to 11 a.m., when H. Price Prazar will provide a verbal appraisal of antiques, books and collectibles for an extra fee. This year’s show admission is $9 per person. Download a coupon for a $1 off at canandaiguaantiquesclassic.org. Food is also available throughout the day and parking is free. The event is conducted in partnership with Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua.
