While they technically broke onto the rock scene in Rome, Italy in 2016, Måneskin’s ascent to stardom truly began in 2021. Now, they’ve earned their first Grammy Award nomination, landing a nod in the Best New Artist category.

The Italian group will be competing against Anitta, Domi & JD Beck, Latto, Omar Apollo, Samara Joy, Muni Long, Tobe Nwigwe, Molly Tuttle and Wet Leg for the honor, come Music’s Biggest Night on February 5th, 2023.

Consisting of Damiano David (vocals), Thomas Raggi (guitar), Victoria De Angelis (bass), and Ethan Torchio (drums), Måneskin have had an eventful 2022. From performing on Saturday Night Live and touring worldwide, to appearing on major festival stages like Coachella and Lollapalooza and preparing their third studio album Rush! (due in January 2023), their Grammy nomination caps off a busy year. Meanwhile, they’re still on tour in the US; you can grab tickets via Ticketmaster here.

Måneskin is getting used to the awards circuit, as they’ve recently racked up nods at the MTV Video Music Awards and iHeartRadio Music Awards. Even if they don’t take home any hardware at the Grammys, the group will still have their three platinum certifications (for their cover of “Beggin'”) to go along with 6 billion streams worldwide. Not too shabby for a Best New Artist.

1. They won the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest

Måneskin represented Italy in the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest, winning with a performance of “Zitti e buoni.” It was Italy’s third win at the contest, and the country’s first since 1990.

2. They took the internet by storm with their VMAs performance

Måneskin’s active 2022 included taking the stage at the MTV Video Music Awards to perform their track “Supermodel.” After De Angelis experienced a slight wardrobe malfunction, MTV had to cut to the audience during the band’s act. But like the true performers that they are, Måneskin didn’t let it stop them from putting on a show. Following the live event, MTV released an “uncensored” version of their performance.

3. They met through Facebook

Måneskin was formed after drummer Torchio put up a post on Facebook asking for possible musicians to form a band in 2015, leading to him meet high school friends David, Raggi and De Angelis. The name of the band came a year later, as the half-Danish De Angelis suggested “måneskin,” which translates to “moonlight.”

4. They’ve performed around the world

After winning Eurovision in 2021, Måneskin continued honing their live performance skills, playing a wide array of shows in different countries. They’ve since toured all over Europe and the US, as well as parts of South America and Tokyo, establishing themselves as a global act. They also were chosen to open for the Rolling Stones in Las Vegas, telling Consequence in an interview that “meeting them and opening their gig was an incredible experience.”

5. You’ve likely heard them on TikTok

If you’re asking yourself, “What songs have I heard from Måneskin?” look no further than their cover of The Four Seasons’ “Beggin’.” With over 8 million uses of their rendition of the song on TikTok, the band’s presence is truly inescapable. Their cover has amassed over a billion streams on Spotify.
