5 things to know about Sheetz store planned for Norton on Barber Road

Sheetz Inc., the Pennsylvania convenience store chain that operates round-the-clock locations, is planning a store in Norton on Barber Road.

Sheetz currently has several locations throughout the Akron area, with the closest being stores in Seville, Wadsworth and on West Waterloo Road in Akron.

The company will build on a two-acre parcel purchased from Nelsen Family Properties that fronts Barber Road opposite the Fred Martin Superstore, a Sheetz representative told the Norton Planning Commission on Tuesday.

The Altoona company bills its stores as "a mecca for people on the go" and features espresso bars and in-store food preparation.

Here are five things to know about the Norton Sheetz.

Site plan takes into account Barber Road flood risk

Barber Road near the Norton site has experienced flooding in recent years, with the area around Fred Martin hit hard in 2019.

Sheetz plans to raise the ground level for its store about two feet to address that possibility.

It will be a 24-hour location

Commission members were told the store would have heavy camera coverage and at least two employees at all times.

No diesel pumps for commercial trucks

The 6,100-square-foot store will have indoor and outdoor seating and 16 pumps, but won't sell commercial truck diesel. It will also have a drive-thru.

The building would have a brick and stone exterior.

Construction would be completed next year

Once approved, Sheetz would move quickly with construction and the store would be completed in 2024. A traffic study conducted for Sheetz recommends turn lanes to help with traffic flow.

Nick Ruffner, Sheetz public relations manager, said the Norton location was still too early in the planning process to discuss details.

Some local Sheetz plans have been rebuffed

Commission members in Norton encouraged Sheetz to proceed, but not all communities are as eager for a new Sheetz location.

In March, the company abandoned plans for a Boston Heights location after community opposition. On the other hand, Sheetz recently announced plans for about 20 stores in the Dayton area.

"We also plan to open more than 10 locations in Ohio by the end of the year," Ruffner said in a emailed response.
