5 things you might've missed in UND's 42-7 win over Indiana State

Nov. 5—TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — In UND's most dominant road effort of the Division I era, the Fighting Hawks beat Indiana State 42-7 on Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Here are five things you might've missed during the game.

Not only did UND quarterback Tommy Schuster break the school's career passing yards record against Indiana State, but the junior from Michigan also broke the school's Division I record for career touchdown passes.

With a 15-yard pass to Red Wilson in the third quarter, Schuster broke the school record for career passing yards.

On a 16-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Smith in the third quarter, Schuster broke Keaton Studsrud's Division I career touchdown passes record.

"I'm so happy for him," UND cornerback C.J. Siegel said. "He's excelling his game even more this year. We all love him. He's a great QB, and a great dude."

Schuster, who broke the school's all-time completions record earlier this year against South Dakota State, now has 37 career touchdowns. Studsrud (2014-17) had 36 career touchdowns.

UND's Red Wilson is technically a wide receiver on the team's roster, but the first-year junior college transfer had a breakout game as a running back against the Sycamores.

Wilson had career highs in carries (four) and yards (30) last week against Abilene Christian.

He broke those career marks against ISU. Wilson ran seven times for seven times for 77 yards including a 45-yard sprint to the end zone in the third quarter.

Wilson also had three catches for 29 yards in the passing game, too.

The touchdown was Wilson's first of his UND career.

"Red can make a lot of plays," UND coach Bubba Schweigert said. "The more we get to know him and the more comfortable he gets in the offense ...

"We saw in fall camp he can make plays. To get him involved is important, and he's making big plays for us."

Indiana State started quarterback Cade Chambers, but the freshman left the game early with an injury for the second week in a row.

Chambers left last week's loss at South Dakota State after he received a targeting hit from the Jackrabbits.

On the Sycamores' second offensive series, Chambers picked up 9 yards on a third-and-3 scramble.

However, Chambers went to the turf after initially trying to walk off the field. He was escorted to the locker room and didn't return to the game.

Gavin Screws entered at quarterback for ISU. He finished 11-for-19 passing for 130 yards with one interception. He was sacked twice.

UND running backs Creighton Mitchell and Luke Skokna saw their first action of the season for UND late in the fourth quarter.

Mitchell had suffered a severe leg injury in a preseason scrimmage leading up to the 2021 season.

He nearly retired from football but a surprise late recovery allowed Mitchell to stick out the season.

Skokna has been out with an injury suffered early in fall camp in August.

Mitchell carries once for 1 yard. Skokna had one carry for 6 yards.

"There was a time there where we didn't know if Creighton was going to play football again," Schweigert said. "To get him a carry, it was awesome."

True freshman punter Luke Silvernale played in his first game, too. He had a 56-yard punt.

Offensive lineman Cade Borud, defensive lineman Jack Teiken and cornerback Antonio Bluiett also played late in the game.

UND played in a rare game impacted by the weather.

The Fighting Hawks hadn't seen poor weather on the road since a 2019 game at Eastern Washington.

Wind gusts of more than 25 miles per hour impacted special teams and the vertical passing attacks.

Tommy Schuster's longest pass was 25 yards — a touchdown to Garett Maag with the wind at his back.

Indiana State's longest pass play went 21 yards.

"Any time it's a windy game, it limits the downfield passing," Schuster said. "We didn't have to do much of that. We were efficient on first down and had some short fields."
