5 things to do in Owen and Morgan counties on Memorial Day weekend

The unofficial start of summer is almost here, and with children getting out of school throughout Morgan and Owen counties, area families are looking for things to do this weekend.

With Memorial Day occuring on Monday, May 30, a lot of folks will be looking for events outside.

Here are five events happening in in Morgan and Owen counties this weekend for the entire family.

Downtown Martinsville Summer Concert Series

Martinsville's Downtown Summer Concert Series returns this year, with concerts starting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 26, near the intersection of Jefferson and Washington streets in the downtown.

Music begins at 7 p.m. with regional band Stella Luna and the Satellites.

Foodways alliance: Seeking a bite to eat in Morgan County? Take a trip down Indiana's culinary food trails.

The concert is free and eventgoers are asked to bring their own seating.

McCormick's Creek State Park

Families throughout the area will be looking to spend some time outside this upcoming weekend, and one location near Spencer will host a number of events this weekend.

McCormick's Creek State Park, 250 McCormick's Creek Park Road, Spencer, will host its fire tower hike starting at 10 a.m. Friday. Those interested in participating can meet at the Canyon Inn for a walk to the park's fire tower.

At 2 p.m. Saturday, the park will host a backyard birds event inside the bird viewing room at the park's nature center.

A naturalist will also host a box turtle talk at the nature center at 2 p.m. Saturday.

The park will host a naturalist-led hike to the Wolf Cafe at 3 p.m. Those interested in the hike are asked to meet at the nature center.

The park will host a turtle feeding event at 10:30 a.m. at the Canyon Inn and a critter feeding event at 2 p.m. on Sunday.

Mooresville, Martinsville pool

The Jimmy Nash Park Pool will open on Saturday, May 28, at the park located at 360 N. Home Ave., Martinsville.

Season passes for this year can be purchased for a family of 4 for $150.

The pool will be open from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. during the swimming season.

Passes are $5 for those 18 and older, $4 for those between three and 17 years old and free for children two and younger.

The Mooresville Family Aquatic Center, 1101 Indianapolis Road, will also be open this weekend.

Hours are 11:15 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays, 11:15 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 12:15 to 6 p.m. Saturdays.

Daily admission is $6.50 for those 13 and older, $5 for children 12 and under and free for children two and younger.

Drink at the Creek

Drink at the Creek Summer Concert Series will return to Cedar Creek Winery, 3820 Leonard Rd., Martinsville.

The series, promoted by RD Productions, will feature The Classic Rock Experience and Thunderstruck, and AC/DC tribute band.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the gate and children 12 years old and younger are free.

Local craft beer, win and spirits as well as food vendors will be available on site.

Movies under the stars

Both Owen and Morgan counties are home to drive-in movie theaters.

Cinema 67, 2037 State Road 67, Spencer, will be showing Top Gun: Maverick and The Lost City on Friday, Saturday and Sunday this weekend.

The theater opens at 7:45 p.m. and shows begin at dusk.

Centerbrook Drive-in, 6735 N. State Road 67, Martinsville, will also be showing Top Gun: Maverick Friday, Saturday and Sunday. A second move has yet to be determined as of Monday afternoon.

Gates open at 8 p.m. and the show begins at dusk.
