5 things to do: Vinyl records, home and garden show, Chicago act, 'Purple Rain,' 'Misery'

New vinyl releases Saturday on Record Store Day

Erie St Vinyl in Massillon and Quonset Hut in Canton plan special events and and will offer new vinyl exclusives on Saturday in celebration of Record Store Day.

Erie St Vinyl, 46 Erie St. N in downtown Massillon, will be open 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Quonset Hut, 3775 Cleveland Ave. NW, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

New records vary by store, but Erie St Vinyl's limited releases are expected to include The Donnas, "Early Singles 1995-1999"; Dolly Parton, "The Monument Singles Collection (1964-1968); Hüsker Dü, "Tonite Longhorn"; Pearl Jam, "Give Way"; The Rolling Stones, "Beggars Banquet"; The Verve Pipe, "Villains"; Muddy Waters, "The Muddy Waters Woodstock Album"; Nas, "Made You Look: God's Son Live 2002"; and Scott Weiland, "12 Bar Blues."

Erie St also will have new selections of used vinyl for sale.

Northeast Ohio musician Cody J. Martin will be performing 1 to 3 p.m. at Erie St. Artist Dave Sherrill will be painting and selling prints from 4 to 6 p.m. Canton-based hip-hop artist and rapper Jéan P the MC is also scheduled to perform.

Little Chunk of Goodness will sell band-themed cookies from noon to 2 p.m. at the record store. Art Bomb Tattoos, open 2 to 9 p.m. at 32 Erie St. N, will have Record Store Day tattoo specials, said Sam Heaton, owner of Erie St Vinyl.

Drink tokens for 10 percent off at Erie St Vinyl will be given out Saturday at Greatness Cafe, Tremont Coffee, Downtownhecks Tap Room and Paradigm Shift Craft Brewery. Customers who make purchases at those businesses can mention they are going to Erie St Vinyl for Record Store Day to receive a token; a limited number are available.

Quonset Hut will have the Pork In The Road food truck on site from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

In addition to new vinyl releases available only at Record Store Day outlets, Quonset Hut also will have giveaways.

Brass Metropolis, a Chicago tribute band, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Lions Lincoln Theatre in downtown Massillon.

Featuring a horn section and harmony arrangements, the eight-piece band specializes in the music of Chicago, a 2016 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Brass Metropolis will feature songs spanning the band's catalog, including when it was originally named the Chicago Transit Authority. Songs range from "Introduction" to "You're the Inspiration."

The annual Stark County Home and Garden Show is Friday and Saturday at the Hall of Fame Village in Canton.

The event has a new location at the Center for Performance at the Hall of Fame Village, an entertainment campus and development near the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Hours are noon to 8 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday. Admission is $5 per person; children under age 12 will be admitted free. To purchase tickets online, go to https://biastarkeco.com/.

Several horticulture and remodeling experts will be on hand to present helpful hints for landscaping. Landscape displays also will be featured, as well as experts in home design, decoration, repair and remodeling.

The 720 Market will present an indoor market in a tented section with crafters, bakers, growers, brewers and artists. More than 50 vendors will be featured, including those specializing in home decor.

Food-related vendors include Crazy Cucumber, Rubber City Candy, Maple Valley Maple and Autumn Creek Farm. Camp Creative will have demonstrations, question-and-answer sessions, cake pop and cocktail classes and area artists.

Food trucks will be on site. The Shootouts, a Northeast Ohio-based vintage country and honky tonk band, will be performing at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Also Saturday, folk and Americana band the Magnificent Goat Brothers perform at 10 a.m. Blue Lunch, an R&B and swing group, perform at 4 p.m.

The Center for Performance is at 1901 Champions Gateway.

"Purple Rain" will be shown at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Canton Palace Theatre.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Friday for the 1984 film starring the late music icon Prince. A costume contest will be at 7 p.m.

"Misery," a stage production based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, will be presented by the Players Guild Theatre on weekends through the end of April at Kent State University at Stark in Jackson Township.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Shows also will be at 7:30 p.m. on April 21-22 and April 28-29. Additional shows will be at 2 p.m. April 23 and April 30.

Opening last weekend, the play features a cast of Jackie Dietz as Annie; Craig Joseph as Paul and Mark Swinerton as Buster.

"Misery" tells the story of romance novelist Paul Sheldon, who is rescued from a car crash by his "Number One Fan," Annie Wilkes. Sheldon wakes up captive in Wilkes' secluded home.

The production will be in the Mary J. Timken Theatre in the Fine Arts Building at KSU at Stark, 6000 Frank Ave. NW. Parking is free.
