5 things to do this weekend in Columbia: Grown-Up Book Fair, Juneteenth concerts and more

With Father's Day and Juneteenth on approach, and the summer sun calling, this weekend has the potential for real busyness. So many opportunities await — how should you spend your time?

Here are just five events this weekend that are worth sifting and taking hold of:

Saturday: Learn Gardening 101 with your kids

Each weekend at the COMO Ag Park, the Columbia Farmers Market and Columbia Center for Urban Agriculture make Saturday school fun. In their One-Room Schoolhouse space, the dedicated local organizations teach our youngest citizens about healthy food practices and food-related issues. Past 2023 classes have focused on subjects like seed planting, women in agriculture, Missouri aquatic animals and more. This week: Gardening 101. Saturday: CoMo Grown Up Book Fair

It's the best of both worlds: the nostalgia of childhood book fairs with the perks of being a grown-up. In its second chapter, this event promises the feel of browsing an old-school Scholastic event with terrific local food, libations and other makers' booths. Beloved local booksellers and authors will be on hand to offer up your next favorite read. 12:30 p.m. at Rose Park. Admission is $15; $25 for early entrance. Sunday: Rose Park Brunch, Lo-Fi Edition

Angelina's Tacos supplies the brunch fare — including ceviche, breakfast burritos and huevos rancheros; DJ Requiem supplies an easy-like-Sunday-morning soundtrack; and Rose provides the patio where it all happens. 11 a.m. Sunday; $10 for entry, $25 for entry and brunch.

Sunday: Celebrate Juneteenth early with the Missouri Symphony Orchestra

A day before the official Juneteenth holiday, the MSO will perform a wide-ranging program alongside Will Lyons and the Celebration Community Choir. 3 p.m. at Missouri Theatre; $19, free for ages 17 and under. Learn more at https://themosy.org/.

Sunday: 'From this Moment On' jazz cabaret

Steven Tharp

The chance to hear a dynamic voice in an intimate space is always worth seizing. Especially when that voice belongs to University of Missouri professor Steven Tharp, who has applied his natural instrument to great operas and song cycles. Here, Tharp will slip quite naturally into the world of jazz, buoyed by pianist Jack Snelling, bassist Isaac Foley and drummer Loyd Warden. Tickets benefit the nonprofit Every Library. 7 p.m. at Serendipity Salon and Gallery; $25.
