High heels, high hopes

The 12th annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Clair Park in downtown Greensburg. On-site registration opens at 9 a.m.

The event aims to raise awareness about gender-based violence in Westmoreland County and surrounding communities, to offer support to all victims and survivors and to spotlight that domestic and sexual violence can affect anyone regardless of gender, race, sexuality, religion or economic status.

Many participants walk in high-heeled shoes as a symbol of challenges women face every day, including being on guard against the possibility of assault, experiencing sexual harassment and dealing with the aftermath of violence. High heels will be loaned to male walkers, subject to availability.

Registration is $5, or free to children under 12.

The walk is organized by the Blackburn Center in Greensburg. For information, visit blackburncenter.org.
