I-5 traffic backed up north of Bellingham by 2-car, rollover crash Wednesday night

Two people were taken to the hospital with injuries and northbound Interstate 5 north of Bellingham was closed for more than a half hour after a two-car, rollover crash Wednesday night.

The crash, which occurred just north of Bakerview Road (exit 259), was first reported by the Washington State Department of Transportation’s twitter account at 5:42 p.m. Dec. 1.

“Troopers, fire, and aid are on scene,” Washington State Patrol Trooper Rocky Oliphant tweeted at 5:54 p.m. “The cause of the collision is still under investigation and updates will be provided as soon as possible!”

A follow up tweet by Oliphant at 6:15 p.m. said that two people had been taken by aid to the hospital with possible injuries and that tow trucks had been able to remove the vehicles so traffic could resume.

“Whenever we have wet and rainy conditions be mindful of your speed, slow down, increase your following distance, and ensure you have good tires,” Oliphant wrote.

WSDOT Traffic cameras showed traffic was backed up well into Bellingham due to the northbound lanes being blocked.
