50 feared dead in Congo gold mine collapse
At least 50 people are thought to have died when a gold mine collapsed in the Democratic Republic of Congo Friday (September 11).
The cave-in happened following heavy rain at the 'Detroit' mine site near Kamituga in the country's east.
That's according to a local NGO, who said about 50 young people couldn't escape the collapsed mine.
Mining accidents are common in unregulated mines in Congo.
Dozens of people die every year in mines where diggers - which are often ill-equipped - burrow deep underground in search of ore.
Last year, a landslide at a disused gold mine killed 16, while a further 43 died in a separate landslide at a copper mine.
