50+ things to do in March, including the St. Patrick's Day Parade, Broadway's 'Hamilton'

With spring right around the corner, folks are eager to get back outside, whether that means sitting on the lawn of their favorite brewery or waking up early, plunging into frigid water for a cause important to them. Whatever it may be, there are plenty of ways to enjoy the warmer weather, engage with live music or learn a new craft in March.

St. Patrick's Day is Friday, March 17 and there are plenty of ways to celebrate, including Springfield's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade and Fleet Fleet's Shamrock Shuffle race.

The Broadway musical "Hamilton" closes on Sunday, March 5, but a number of local theater productions are opening in March. These include Missouri State University's "Sweat" and "Waiting for Lefty," Springfield Little Theatre's "The Play That Goes Wrong" and Martha's Vineyard's "Sordid Lives," the nightclub's first theater production.

For folks who enjoy a good laugh, the Blue Room Comedy Club has a full schedule, featuring Jesus Trejo, Scott Seiss, Monty Franklin, Ralph Barbosa, Greg Hahn and T.J. Miller. The comedy club is also hosting its annual Kids Comedy Workshop on Saturday, March 11.

Where: Juanita K. Hammons Hall for the Performing Arts at 525 S. John Q. Hammons Parkway

The Broadway musical of "Hamilton" is coming to Missouri State University's campus. The production tells the story of founding father Alexander Hamilton with a modern twist. The musical has won a Tony Grammy, Oliver Awards, Pulitzer Price for Drama and a special citation from the Kennedy Center Honors.

Missouri State University's 'Sweat'

When: March 1, 5, 6 and 9

Where: Balcony Theatre in Craig Hall at 1147 Grand St.

Missouri State University's Theatre and Dance Department is putting on "Sweat," a play that tells the story of middle-class workers in the Rust Belt during tragedy. Showings on March 1, 6 and 9 begin at 7:30 p.m. and the matinee on March 5 begins at 2:30 p.m.

Pottery Classes at Creava Studio

When: March 1-31

Where: Creava Studio at 1637 E. St. Louis St.

Creava Studio is hosting three four-week-long pottery classes in March: Beginner Wheel Throwing, Intermediate Wheel Throwing and Hand Building. All classes are for folks 16 and up. Classes includes studio time, tools and glazing and firing materials. Classes do not include clay, but clay can be purchased at the Creava Studio store.

The beginner's wheel throwing class focuses on tips and tricks needed to successfully throw clay on a wheel, including wedging, centering, making cylinders, trimming and making handles. One instructor will provide individualized, hands-on teaching. These classes are offered Tuesdays from 6-8 p.m., Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Thursdays from 6-8 p.m.

The intermediate wheel throwing class is for those with a bit more experience. Participants will learn how to make casseroles, pouring vessels, plates and lidded forms. These classes are offered Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 6-8 p.m.

The hand building class is ideal for folks who have little to no experience with clay and are interested in creating without a pottery wheel. These classes are offered Mondays from 3-5 p.m., Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and Fridays from 5-7 p.m.

Maker's Mark Tasting Seminar and All-You-Can-Eat Steak Dinner

When: Thursday, March 2

Where: Top of the Rock Wine Room at 150 Top of the Rock Road in Ridgedale

Big Cedar Lodge is hosting a tasting seminar and all-you-can-eat steak dinner in celebration of its newly selected Makers Mark Barrel. During the Maker's Mark Tasting Seminar, guests may try the new Maker's Mark Whiskey. The seminar is from 2-3 p.m. The Maker's Mark All-You-Can-Eat Steak Dinner is a three-course meal with all-you-can-eat plates served family style. The dinner is from 6-9 p.m.

Steven Curtis Chapman Still

When: Thursday, March 2 at 7 p.m.

Where: Gillioz Theatre at 325 Park Central East

Contemporary Christian music singer-songwriter Steven Curtis Chapman is performing in Springfield in March. 49 of Chapman's singles have ranked No. 1, making him the most awarded Christian musician in history.

Winter Jam

When: Thursday, March 2 at 7 p.m.

Where: Great Southern Bank Arena at 685 S. John Q. Hammons Parkway

The Winter Jam Tour Spectacular is returning to Springfield, featuring contemporary Christian music artists. This year's artists include We the Kingdom, Jeremy Camp, Andy Mineo, Anne Wilson, Disciple, Austin French, Newsong, Thrive Worshp, Sean Be and Renee. The family-friendly event runs about 3.5 hours.

According to the Winter Jam website, $15 donations are recommended for general admission seating. Folks can reserve a spot by purchasing a Jam Nation membership, available online at 2023.jamtour.com/jam-nation.

Missouri State University's 'Waiting for Lefty'

When: March 2, 3, 7 and 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Jesus Trejo at Blue Room Comedy Club

A Long Beach native, Jesus Trejo is a stand-up comedian, known for his hour stand-up special on Showtime, "Stay at Home Son." Trejo has also appeared on Netflix's "Mr. Iglaesias" and "Gentefied," Freeform's "Alone Together" and TV Land's "Teachers." Trejo was named a Variety Top 10 Comic in 2017.

Martha's Vineyard's 'Sordid Lives'

For the first time in Martha's Vineyard's 40-plus-year-old history, the club is hosting a theatre production. "Sordid Lives" tells the story of a family coming together, despite different moral opinions, following the death of a loved one.

Nature Art: Words on Birds

When: Friday, March 3 from 7-8 p.m.

Where: Springfield Conservation Nature Center at 4601 S. Nature Center Way

The Springfield Conservation Nature Center is hosting a family-friendly, interactive concert with a focus on birds. Musicians Kelly and Donna Mullhollan from Still on the Hill will perform for the free event.

Springfield RV Mega Show

When: March 3-5

Where: Ozark Empire Fairgrounds at 3001 N. Grant Ave.

The 34th annual Springfield RV Mega Show is the first weekend of March, showcasing toy haulers, pop-ups, fifth wheelers and pull trailers. Admission is paid at the door.

Show Your Colors Artists Showcase

When: Friday, March 3 from 5-7 p.m.

Where: Creamery Arts Center at 411 N. Sherman Parkway

The Springfield Regional Arts Council is hosting its third annual Show Your Colors Artists Showcase. The exhibition will feature works from both local and regional artists of color. Local band Unessential Jane will perform at the exhibition's opening reception on Friday, March 3 from 6-7 p.m. The opening reception is free but donations for the Artists Empowerment Collective, managed by the arts council, are recommended.

Papa Green Shoes

When: Friday, March 3 at 8 p.m.

Where: The Riff at 1900 W. Sunset St.

Papa Green Shoes is a four-piece blues, soul, funk and rock band based in Springfield. Formerly, Papa Green Shoes was The Riff's house band, performing each Thursday night for five years. The band is a 12-time winner of the International Blues Challenge and has been voted Springfield's Best Blues Band.

Concealed Carry Class

When: Saturday, March 4 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Where: Uncle Bucks Auditorium at Bass Pro Shops at 1 Bass Pro Drive

Legal Heat is hosting a concealed carry class at Bass Pro Shops that qualifies participants for a Missouri Concealed Carry Weapons Permit and Arizona Concealed Weapons Permit. Topics will include firearms safety, handling, transportation and storage, along with ammunition type, self-defense laws, use of deadly force laws and concealed carry techniques. The class also includes a range portion, allowing participants to fire a minimum of 20 practice rounds and 20 qualifications rounds. A semi-automatic pistol or revolver and a minimum of 40 rounds of factory ammunition are required for the class.

Puttin' Around the Shrine Mosque

When: Saturday, March 4 at from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Where: Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Mosque at 601 E. St. Louis St.

The Shrine Mosque is hosting its third annual mini golf tournament. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the awards ceremony will be hosted at 5 p.m.

Springfield Polar Plunge

When: Saturday, March 4 at 11 a.m.

Where: Ski Shack Cable Park at 5539 S. Campbell Ave.

The annual Polar Plunge is a fundraiser for Special Olympics Missouri, encouraging folks to walk, run or crawl into ice-cold winter waters. In 2022, the Springfield Polar Plunge raised over $51,000 with a total of 205 participants, according to Special Olympics Missouri.

Seuss Science Day

When: Saturday, March 4 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Pat Jones YMCA at 1901 E. Republic Road

Ozarks Public Television and the Ozarks Regional YMCA are hosting their 12th annual Seuss Science Day. The Dr. Seuss-themed event will include STEM activities, Dr. Seuss story time, a special appearance by The Cat in the Hat and a big rig area, featuring a fire truck, army Humvee, police car and ambulance. The event is free.

Bird Banding

When: Saturday, March 4 from 1-4 p.m.

Where: Springfield Conservation Nature Center at 4601 S. Nature Center Way

The Springfield Conservation Nature Center is partnering with the Missouri River Bird Observatory to capture winter birds around feeding stations at the center for banding in easy viewing. No registration is required.

Police vs. Fire Ice Hockey Game

When: Saturday, March 4 at 6 p.m.

Where: Jordan Valley Ice Park at 635 E. Trafficway St.

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board is hosting its fourth annual Police vs. Fire Ice Hockey Game, a fundraiser for the Greene County 100 Club. The Greene County 100 Club is a nonprofit that provides financial support to the spouses and dependent children of police officers and firefighters who were killed in the line of duty.

Admission is $10 at the door.

417 Whiskey Festival

When: Saturday, March 4 from 7-9 p.m.

Where: Finley Farms at 802 Finley Farms Lane in Ozark

CCCC Sertoma is hosting its annual 417 Whiskey Festival at Finley Farms. Whiskey Tangos Spirits & Tobacco of Ozark is presenting its Private Barrell Selection for the festival. Participants will be able to taste from the selection and meet members of the Whiskey Tangos team. Three private parties are available for reservations, which provide 30-minute tasting experiences.

In addition to the whiskey, live entertainment will be provided by Bryan Copeland, Ladies in Blue featuring Marla Ritchie and Madison Harrison. Finley Farms will provide small plate offerings and Big Whiskey's and The Bourbon Society of the Ozarks will offer cocktails throughout the evening.

Springfield Symphony Orchestra's 'Star Crossed Lovers'

Springfield Symphony Orchestra's 'Star Crossed Lovers' retells the story of Romeo and Juliet. The production will feature Chinese composer's poem "Nostalgia," along with work from 2022 Hellam Competition Winner Ilkhom Mukhiddinov.

Chappell Roan: Naked in North America

Kayleigh Rose Amstutz, more popularly known as Chappell Roan, is a queer pop music singer-songwriter from Willard. Each of Roan's performances a part of her "Naked in North America" tour falls under a theme; Springfield's is appropriately, "Homecoming Queen."

Soulfly at Outland Ballroom

When: Wednesday, March 8 at 6 p.m.

Soulfly, a Brazilian-American heavy metal band, is bringing its "Totem Tour" to Springfield in early March. The band formed in 1997 in Los Angeles by former Sepultura front man Max Cavalera.

Springfield Little Theatre's 'The Play That Goes Wrong'

"The Play That Goes Wrong" is a Monty Python-Sherlock Holmes hybrid, written by Henry Lewis and Henry Shields. The production follows an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can't play dead and other cast members who continue to trip over their lines. The play is rated PG-13.

Springfield's St. Paddy's Day Parade is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year after a three year hiatus due to the pandemic. The parade will begin on Historic Commercial Street at Benton Avenue and end just past Park Central Square on Walnut Street.

Prior to the parade, Tame Magazine will be hosting its Irish Pet Contest at the Jefferson Avenue Footbridge at 12:30 p.m. Following, a celebration will be held at Park Central Square, with live music from Corey CoJo Johnson between noon and 1 p.m., Bold Deniers from 1:30-2:30 p.m. and Deja Crew from 4-6 p.m.

Kids Comedy Workshop

When: Saturday, March 11 from 2-3:15 p.m.

Where: Blue Room Comedy Club at 420 W. College St.

Blue Room Comedy Club's Kids Comedy Workshop is for children ages six and up. Children will learn from local, professional comedians, working with interactive tools for public speaking and stage time.

Theory of a Deadman and Skillet Rock Resurrection Tour

When: Saturday, March 11 at 7 p.m.

Where: Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Mosque at 601 E. St. Louis St.

Theory of a Deadman and Skillet are performing their "Rock Resurrection Tour" at the Shrine Mosque. The Canadian rock band formed in 1999, and nine of its singles have made the top 10 of the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart, including "Bad Girlfriend," "Lowlife, "Rx" and "History of Violence."

The Bored Teachers 'We Can't Make This Stuff Up' Comedy Tour

The Bored Teachers comedy tour is one of the bigger entertainment platforms for teachers internationally, according to The Bored Teachers website. Outside of its tour, Bored Teachers is a platform for educators to find humor in the "frustration and exhaustion that comes with the teaching profession."

Springfield Symphony Orchestra's 'Love Triangle'

When: Saturday, March 11 at 7:30 p.m.

Springfield Symphony Orchestra's "Love Triangle" features the work of Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms. The marriage of composer Schumann and pianist Schumann is considered one of "musical innovation and intellectual engagement." However, when young Brahms entered their household, he developed a deep bond with Schumann, which has long been the subject of question. The orchestra's performance will include a narration that helps retell this story.

My Politic

Ozark natives, My Politic, will be performing its "The Missouri Folklore Tour" at The Royal in mid-March. The folk-Americana band is made up of duo Kaston Guffy and Nick Pankey.

RK Shows Gun Show

When: March 11-12

RK Shows is hosting a gun show at the fairgrounds in mid-March. The show will feature display guns, hunting supplies, military surplus and outdoor gear.

Knotty Tree Macrame Workshop

Ralph Barbosa is a stand-up comedian popularly known for his "Don't Tell Comedy" set on YouTube. In 2022, Barbosa made his Comedy Central debut and 2019 he was recognized as the Funniest Comic in Texas.

Shamrock Shuffle

When: Saturday, March 18 at 8 a.m.

Where: Park Central Square

Fleet Fleet Springfield and Saucony are hosting their annual St. Paddy's Day race. Previously, the race was called Shamrock & Shenanigans. The race includes a 5K, 15K and Beer Run (participants must drink a total of four beers and run one mile). Folks may also participate in a virtual St. Paddy's Day race that runs from March 18 to March 25.

Haus of Nebula Drag Brunch

Queen City Shout, a week-long arts festival, is celebrating its 12th year. The festival features nearly 100 musical acts, both solo musicians and bands, at eight venues throughout Springfield. Queen City Shout will also host several short films and live painters during the week.

Adelita's Way at Kiss Bar & Grill

When: Wednesday, March 22 from 5-11:30 p.m.

Where: Kiss Bar & Grill at 2550 S. Campbell Ave. Suite 800

Hard rock band Adelita's Way is visiting Springfield in late March at Kiss Bar & Grill. The band formed in Las Vegas in 2006 and broke into the mainstream scene with their debut single "Invincible." Otherwise, Moon Fever and Above Snakes will also be performing.

Micro All-Star Midget Wrestling

When: Wednesday, March 22 at 8 p.m.

Where: Club Rodeo at 2032 W. Bennett. St.

The Micro-Wrestling All-Stars are hosting their "March Midget Madness" at Club Rodeo. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m.

Taj Farrant

Australian rock musician Taj Farrant is performing at The Riff with rock musician Nathan Bryce and rock cover band Loaded Dice.

Greg Hahn at Blue Room Comedy Club

Where: Blue Room Comedy Club at 420 W. College St.

Greg Hahn is a stand-up comedian, known for his appearances on the "Bob and Tom Radio Show" and "Late Night with Conan O'Brien."

Sock and Undie Rundie

When: Saturday, March 25

Where: Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park at 3825 W. Farm Road 146

The annual Sock and Undie Rundie at Rutledge-Wilson Farm Park is a benefit for FosterAdopt Connect, a nonprofit dedicated to providing foster and adoption resources in Springfield. Folks are encouraged to donate new socks and/or underwear before participating in the 5K.

Crown The King 3: Strongman Contest

When: Saturday, March 25 at 9:30 a.m.

Where: Rage Fitness Springfield at 2321 S. Campbell Ave.

Springfield's Crown The King 3: Strongman Contest is a pro-qualifier event for the United States Strongman competition. Strongman competitions test athletes strength in a variety of non-traditional ways, which as truck pulls, sandbag tosses, deadlifts and farmer's walks (holding a heavy load of weight in both hands and walking for a designated distance).

Springfield's strongman contest will include an axle press, axle squat, farmer's carry and tire flip medley and an odd implement carry (duck walk, sandbag, reserve sled drag).

Joe Gatto's Night of Comedy

When: Saturday, March 25 at 8 p.m.

Where: Gillioz Theatre at 325 Park Central East

Joe Gatto is a comedian, actor and producer from Staten Island. Previously, Gatto was a member of the Tenderloins, a comedy group made up of Sal Vulcano, James Murray and Brian Quinn, known for "The Impractical Jokers."

Ozark Highlands Trail Backpacking Trip

When: March 25-26

Where: Ozark Highlands Trail in northwest Arkansas

The Springfield-Greene County Park Board is hosting an overnight backpacking trip to the Ozark Highlands Trail in northwest Arkansas. Over two days, participants will hike 13 miles of the trail. Transportation to the trail head, water filtration and major gear are included, but participants should be prepared to carry their own gear and supplies.

Two Dykes & a Mic: McKenzie Goodwin and Rachel Scanlon at Blue Room Comedy Club

When: Sunday, March 26

Where: Blue Room Comedy Club at 420 W. College St.

"Two Dykes and a Mic" is a weekly podcast hosted by McKenzie Goodwin and Rachel Scanlon, focusing on sex positivity, queer dating and the LGBTQ community. Goodwin and Scanlon are both Los Angeles-based comedians and writers.

The Man Show Expo

When: March 31-April 1

Where: Ozark Empire Fairgrounds at 3001 N. Grant Ave.

The Man Show Expo is returning to the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds, featuring cars and trucks, beer, barbeque, boats, electronics, home improvement displays, and hunting and fishing gear. The Ozark Shred Fest, a drifting event, will also be taking place on Saturday, April 1 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is paid at the door.

T.J. Miller has over 15 years of stand-up comedy experience and his shows are often described as "a one man philosophy circus," Blue Room Comedy Club states. Miller has two television specials, "T.J. Miller: No Real Reason" on Comedy Central and "T.J. Miller: Meticulously Ridiculous" on HBO.

Miller was the voice actor for Gene in "The Emoji Movie," Fred in Disney's "Big Hero 6," Tuffnut in "How to Train Your Dragon" and "How to Train Your Dragon 2," Prancer in "Ice Age: Mammoth Christmas," Robbie in "Gravity Falls, Randy in "F Is for Family" and a slue of other characters in movies and television shows.
