The Governor's economic office moved to recommend approval for several development grants for South Dakota, including $500,000 for Sioux Falls, over a week ago.

The Board of Economic Development met on Nov. 22 in Pierre and on video chat to recommend moving forward with development grants to Lake Preston, Sioux City and Sioux Falls, including the Sioux Falls Development Foundation (SFDF) for $500,000.

A motion was made by Sharon Casey, seconded by Mike Luken and moved forward by voice vote. The motions were only to recommend grant measures.

Now the grants must move forward before approval. If the motion moves forward to approval, the Local Infrastructure Improvement grant will go toward the SFDF in accordance with board’s policy.

It has not been determined where in development projects the grant would go, but a previous governor's office grant helped the SFDF form a partnership to improve workforce alongside Southeast Technical Institute for $100,000. The foundation was not able to reply before time of publication concerning this newest recommendation.

The nonprofit Sioux Falls Development Foundation Inc. saw $1,274,928 in revenue minus expenses, about half of its income source coming from grants, in the latest tax filing available for the foundation from 2019.
