52,800 counterfeit COVID-19 test kits seized at Port of Seattle
U.S. Customs and Border Protection recently seized 52,800 counterfeit COVID-19 test kits in a large e-commerce shipment at the Port of Seattle, CBP announced Thursday.
According to CBP, criminals shipped the counterfeit test kits among thousands of other e-commerce parcels, but the “layered enforcement strategy of CBP officers and agriculture specialists” allowed them to be discovered.
CBP partnered with the Food and Drug Administration and determined that the test kits are not fit to enter the U.S. economy.
“This is a great example of multiple CBP teams and federal agencies coming together to ensure the American consumer can have confidence in the safety of the goods they are purchasing,” said Seattle Area Port Director J. Rene Ortega.
