MONROE COUNTY — Monroe County boat owners saved 702 gallons of oil this spring by recycling boat covers.

Four area boat clubs — the Monroe Boat Club, Big Daddy’s Marina, Trout’s Yacht Basin and Harbor Maine — offered recycling of plastic boat coverings.

“The State of Michigan has picked up the plastic that we collected and sent a report,” said David Ryan, Monroe Boat Club Association president. “We recycled the plastic covers from 52 different boats. According to the State of Michigan Recycling Coalition, that saved 702 gallons of oil, 5,980 kilowatt hours of energy and avoided using 1,050 cubic feet of landfill space.”

MBC Association, the nonprofit arm of the Monroe Boat Club, administered the program and provided the bags at a discounted rate to area boat owners.

Ryan is already planning for next year’s recycling program.

“Next season every boat in the Monroe Boat Club storage yard with a cover, as well as every boat stored at Big Daddy's Marina, will participate in the recycling program," he said. "Any area resident can obtain one of the special recycling bags from MBC and is welcome to utilize the boat club as their drop-off point for the recyclable plastic boat wrap.”
