MPs have voted to approve the new tiered system of Covid-19 restrictions as the Government suffered its biggest rebellion yet.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson managed to ward off growing Tory opposition to lockdowns in the Commons while Labour abstained on the vote.

After a debate lasting hours in the House, 291 MPs voted for the new measures, while 53 Tories rebelled, along with two Tellers - Steve Baker and Sir Robert Syms. 18 Conservatives abstained.

Mr Johnson opened the Commons debate by stressing the tiers are not a return to lockdown, and that people will be "free to leave their homes for any reason, and when they do they will find shops open".

Ahead of the vote Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer decided to withdraw his support for Government coronavirus restrictions for the first time.

He told the Commons the Government is underestimating the "raw anger" in the country over the lack of economic support, saying what has been offered so far "just doesn't stack up".

He added: "It is the failure to get control of the virus that has left the UK with the worst recession of the G7 and the highest death toll in Europe".

"The Prime Minister is fatally split between appeasing his backbenchers and following the science, and he is ending up pleasing nobody."

In all 186 Labour MPs abstained, and 15 voted No. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also voted No but currently sits as an Independent after having the party whip withdrawn.

The scale of the Tory rebellion over lockdowns has swelled to new heights, after 32 Conservatives voted against proposals for the national lockdown for England on November 4.

All seven Tory MPs in areas due to enter Tier 1 restrictions - the loosest level - voted with the government.

Of the 207 English Conservative MPs in Tier 2, 168 (81.2pc) voted with the Government, while 28 (13.5pc) rebelled and eight abstained.

From 131 Conservative MPs facing Tier 3, 102 (77.9pc) voted Aye, and 24 (18.3pc) voted No, with four abstentions.

The new restrictions

More than 23 million people in England, which is 41.5 per cent of the population, will face the highest tier restrictions as the national lockdown lifts.

Large urban areas such as Greater Manchester and Birmingham have been placed in Tier 3, London and Liverpool are in Tier 2 and just three regions will be in Tier 1. Use our postcode tool to find out what tier you fall under.

All three tiers will face limits on gatherings and rules to cover faces, but non-essential retail will reopen and international travel will resume.

On December 23, restrictions will be relaxed in all tiers until December 27 to allow three households to celebrate together indoors, outdoors or in a place of worship.
