55 Aurora Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

AURORA, IL — Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program competition include more than 50 students from Aurora schools.

The city’s 55 semifinalists include 31 students from the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy, 12 at Waubonsie Valley High School, nine at Metea Valley High School, two at Marmion Academy and 1 at Aurora Christian Schools.

The nationwide pool of 16,000 semifinalists, which represents less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state, according to a news release.

Semifinalists in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program have an opportunity to continue in the competition for about 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth a total of more than $30 million that will be awarded next spring.

Over 1.5 million juniors entered the 2021 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2019 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants, the release states.

National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April 2021. Recipients will join more than 353,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.
