I-55 bridge to close this weekend due to construction

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The I-55 Memphis Arkansas Bridge will be closed from Saturday, February 3 through Monday, February 5 due to construction.

From Saturday starting at 5 a.m. to Monday ending at 6 a.m., crews will work to construct the I-55 and Crump interchange, according to TDOT.

They are working to repair the bridge and remove overhead sign structures. Nichole Lawrence with TDOT said there is a lot that needs to be done.

“More moving rail, making some repairs on the bridge itself,” she said.

Lawrence said crews are also going to take advantage of the closure to work on potholes caused by the recent winter storm.

As the shutdown begins, she is warning drivers about more detours and closures ahead.

“Contract allows eight weekend closures, and this is weekend three,” Lawrence said. “They also allow two full weeks so those should be coming up later this year as well.”

The following routes will be impacted:

  • I-55 SB will be closed at Bridgeport Road in Arkansas

  • I-55 NB will be closed at South Parkway in Tennessee (Local traffic will be allowed to continue to the McLemore exit)

  • I-55 SB ramp will be closed

  • Crump Boulevard WB will be closed

While the Crump interchange is set to be completed early next year, a total replacement of the 75-year-old bridge is still on hold.

“Still in a holding game but we have to wait to hear from federal partners of when we can start. Construction could start in 2026,” Lawrence said.

TDOT said there is still a lot to work to be done at the Crump interchange, and if they are granted the green light to replace the bridge, the interchange would feed into the new bridge.
