Here Are the 55 Colleges Being Investigated for Allegedly Mishandling Rape Cases
Just two days after the White House released its recommendations to curb sexual assault on college campuses, the Department of Education released the names of 55 colleges and universities currently under investigation for possible Title IX violations regarding sexual assault.
An investigation doesn't necessarily indicate wrongdoing, obviously, but this list is important for the sake of transparency. Current and prospective students should know whether or not a school has been accused of mishandling rape cases.
We reached out to the Department for the list, and we've marked all 55 schools on the map below. As you can see, investigations are ongoing pretty much all across the country. Both Harvard University and Harvard Law School are currently being investigated. So are big state schools like UC-Berkeley, Ohio State, and Penn State. Catherine E. Lhamon, the Department's Assistant Secretary for Civil Rights, said in a statement,
We are making this list available in an effort to bring more transparency to our enforcement work and to foster better public awareness of civil rights. We hope this increased transparency will spur community dialogue about this important issue. I also want to make it clear that a college or university’s appearance on this list and being the subject of a Title IX investigation in no way indicates at this stage that the college or university is violating or has violated the law.
This is the first time the public has been able to access the names of universities under investigation without asking first.
