55th annual Viking Fest set to take place at Anderson Waterfront Park in Poulsbo

The shores of Liberty Bay will again come alive in May when the 55th annual Viking Fest takes place in Poulsbo this weekend.

The festival opens on Friday afternoon at Anderson Waterfront Park and along Front Street, with the kids carnival and street fair, along with music performances at the park's pavilion that will be scheduled through the weekend. And of course — the Vikings will arrive and make their presence felt throughout the festivities.

The festival's showcase, the Viking Fest parade through downtown's streets lined with residents and visitors, is scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m., and followed by an evening street dance on Front Street that is welcome to all ages. Before the parade the Viking Fest Road Race, with a 5-mile, 1-mile and kids' dash option, starts at 10 a.m. from Lions Park. And if you don't want to run, just show up for the pancake breakfast that opens at 7 a.m. downtown.

To get to Front Street to watch the parade, a shuttle service is available from North Kitsap High School, for a $3 donation that supports student programs at WildWise School. No downtown parking lots are open and roads into downtown will be closed.

On Sunday 500 riders take to the streets for the Viking Tour bicycle ride, with three options for scenic loops around North Kitsap. That leads into the Viking Brew Fest, with beer and wine from 12 local vendors and food at the parking lot just north of Centennial Park, off 8th Avenue. Tickets are required for the brew fest.
