A 56-year-old man died in an Alabama prison after collapsing on his way to the infirmary.

The Alabama Department of Corrections confirmed Tuesday that Danny Wayne Moore died in Bibb Correctional Facility in Brent, Alabama, on Dec. 17. ADOC spokesperson Kelly Betts said Moore walked to the prison's health care unit and then collapsed. Medical staff attempted live-saving measures and paramedics were called, but Moore died.

Betts said that Moore's cause of death is pending an autopsy and investigation by the ADOC's Law Enforcement Services Division.

Because the ADOC does not report when those in its custody die, the Montgomery Advertiser relies on tips from incarcerated people and their loved ones to report on deaths in the Alabama prison system.

2022 has been a deadly year in Alabama prisons. Monthly reports from ADOC show 179 men and women died in state custody through the first nine months of the year. The Equal Justice Initiative, a nonprofit representing prisoners across the country, earlier this month reported there have 222 prison deaths this year. That would make 2022 already the deadliest year on record in Alabama prisons, based on an Advertiser analysis of previous ADOC statistical reports.
