593 Coronavirus Deaths Reported In Suffolk Nursing Homes

SUFFOLK COUNTY, NY — A spike in the reported number of nursing home deaths includes 593 residents who died in Suffolk County nursing homes. On Monday, data released by the New York State Health Department included both confirmed and presumed deaths related to the coronavirus, the first time statistics in both categories have been released.

Across the state, the Health Department reported 1,700 deaths that were previously not factored into the count. On Long Island, more than 1,000 additional deaths were added to the death toll of residents in nursing homes and long-term care facilities. The death total at Nassau nursing homes is 457.

First reported by the Associated Press, the revised count takes into account those who died before widespread testing was available. The AP reported that 22 nursing homes, largely in New York City and Long Island, have reported at least 40 deaths.

On Tuesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the public should take the new data with a "grain of salt." Cuomo suggested the Health Department's understanding of "presumed deaths" is likely to evolve as it further studies deaths outside of hospitals and nursing homes, ABC NY reported.

"How do you confirm all those deaths as attributed to coronavirus? I would just have a caveat on all of these. I think they are going to change over time," Cuomo said.

Here's the breakdown in the total nursing home deaths in Suffolk County. As noted, the totals include both confirmed and presumed deaths due to coronavirus. To search for specific nursing homes, the Health Department's data can be accessed here as a PDF.
