6,000 year-old settlement discovered off Croatian coast
A 6,000 year-old island settlement was discovered
off the coast of Croatia
Location: Lumbarda, Croatia
Archaeologist Mate Parica was examining satellite images of the coastline
when he spotted a large, shallow area on the seabed
(SOUNDBITE) (Croatian) ARCHAEOLOGY RESEARCHER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ZADAR, MATE PARICA, SAYING :
"The location was found completely by accident, I have been dealing with submerged prehistoric sites for a couple of years now and often watch aerial footage. Occasionally some anomalies can be seen on the satellite images. I thought - maybe it is natural, maybe not, and decided to dive with a colleague. We found some ceramic items and knives, and we concluded it is something special, not a natural thing."
The Neolithic settlement was likely built from around 4,500 B.C.
(SOUNDBITE) (Croatian) ARCHAEOLOGY RESEARCHER AT THE UNIVERSITY OF ZADAR, MATE PARICA, SAYING :"There are hundreds and hundreds of walls per site, we have opened a small part now, about 1%. We found out that they go deep, there are a lot of rows of stones and we found a lot of archaeological material, telling us what they ate, threw away what they lived on and so on."
