6 Brunswick events to watch this week include Civil War life and 'Learning Leland'

Civil War soldiers' endurance during the war

Renowned historian and speaker Peter Carmichael will examine how Civil War soldiers endured the brutal and unpredictable existence of army life at the next meeting of the Brunswick Civil War Round Table. The circumstances will be revealed in Carmichael's presentation, “The War for the Common Soldier: How Men Thought, Fought, and Survived in Civil War Armies,” based on his book "The War for the Common Soldier."

Carmichael is the Robert C. Fuller Professor of Civil War Studies at Gettysburg College. After completing his doctorate at Penn State University, he taught at Western Carolina University, the University of North Carolina Greensboro, and West Virginia University. He's also appeared on the PBS Robert E. Lee documentary for the "American Experience" series and “Who Do You Think You Are.”

The meeting will be held Tuesday, March 7 at the Hatch Auditorium on Caswell Beach. Registration begins at 6:15 p.m. The visitor fee is $10, which can be applied toward the $25 annual membership dues which can include a spouse. Get to Know Your Government: Learning Leland

Leland residents are invited to learn about planning and development at the town's education initiative, Get to Know Your Government: Learning Leland.

The forum will focus on planning and development. Participants will learn about guiding plans, zoning and rezoning, how development review works, preservation and conservation efforts, flood damage prevention, stormwater controls, the annexation process, transportation improvements, and more.

The forum will be held 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 7 in the council chambers at Town Hall, located at 102 Town Hall Drive.

The goal of this initiative is to is to engage more with community members and help bridge the understanding of how their local government works.

The forum will cover a wide range of topics, from the broader role of local government in North Carolina, to the specifics of how certain processes are structured in the town of Leland. This information will be disseminated through a variety of public outreach strategies, both digitally and in-person.

The goal of this new initiative is to engage more with community members and help bridge the understanding of how their local government works. Town Hall forums will be held quarterly.

National Society Daughters of the American Revolution

Brunswick Town Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 8, for a special program, honoring area veterans.

Daughters of the American Revolution is a service organization founded in 1890 for women who can prove direct, blood lineage from a Revolutionary War Patriot. The organization promotes patriotism, education, and historic preservation.

Avoid the heat, and set up an indoor picnic at the Leland Cultural Arts Center while you watch a screening of your favorite movie.

The film showing this week will be "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 11 at 1212 Magnolia Village Way, Leland. Participants can drop in for a free Harry Potter theme craft before the movie, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

No pets or alcohol allowed.

Maritime Museum model club

The N.C. Maritime Museum at Southport is starting a new partnership with the Wilmington Plastic Modelers Club in the hopes of starting a monthly gathering to support those in the Southport area with an interest in model making.

The first meeting will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 11 at the N.C. Maritime Museum at Southport, 204 E. Moore St., downtown Southport.

Members of the Wilmington club will be on hand with a variety of ships, planes, tanks, and cars in various stages of construction. Club members will also be bringing a selection of specialized modeling tools that will be available for use.

The public is invited to bring a model of their own to work on, to get help with their models or even with getting started.

The meeting is free and open to all ages; under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.
