6 deaths including pedestrians, bicyclist amid weekend crashes across Central Florida

Six people killed in crashes across Central Florida this weekend include two pedestrians and a bicyclist ejected into a river, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

In Brevard County on Friday night, an unknown vehicle being driven westbound on State Road 520, Merritt Island Causeway, hit a bicyclist who was riding in the paved shoulder approaching the Hubert Humphrey Bridge, FHP said. The collision ejected the 56-year-old bicyclist into the Indian River from where the U.S. Coast Guard recovered the bicyclist and pronounced him dead-on-scene, FHP said.

Early morning Saturday, a 64-year-old man walking across Orange Blossom Trail not on a crosswalk was hit by an unknown vehicle that fled the scene, FHP said. The man was rushed to Orlando Regional Medical Center where, FHP said, he was pronounced deceased.

FHP said a witness believes the 64-year-old was ran over twice as he was already lying in the roadway.

Another Orange County Saturday morning crash involved a 48-year-old man driving eastbound on State Road 520 with five passengers who were not wearing seatbelts when he switched lanes striking a vehicle driven by a 60-year-old woman, FHP said. The man’s vehicle overturned multiple times after the collision causing three of the passengers to be ejected, FHP said. A 44-year-old female passenger in the overturned car was pronounced dead-on-scene and the other five occupants in the vehicle were transported to Orlando Regional Medical Center with injuries ranging from minor to critical, according to FHP.

In Brevard County, a 35-year-old woman driving a 2017 Nissan Altima northbound on Interstate 95 veered off the road for unknown reasons and crashed into a pole on Saturday at 6:22 a.m., FHP said. The woman was transported to Melbourne Regional Hospital where she was pronounced deceased, according to FHP.

Another fatal crash on Saturday morning in Osceola County involved a 30-year-old man traveling eastbound on U.S. Highway 192 who struck a 56-year-old pedestrian walking south across the highway not at a marked crosswalk, FHP said. The pedestrian was pronounced deceased-on-scene by FHP.

On Sunday morning, a 47-year-old man driving southbound on State Road 417 in a 2012 Mercedes collided with a semi truck without a trailer, FHP said. The collision caused the truck to run off the roadway and into the guardrail then overturn on a large embankment; the vehicle with the 47-year-old struck the barrier and rotated, FHP said.

The Mercedes driver was transported to Osceola Regional Hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries while the truck driver was pronounced dead-on-scene, according to FHP. FHP is still waiting on the identity of the semi truck driver.

All the crashes this weekend are still under investigation and those with information about any of the crashes are asked to call FHP at 407-737-2213 or CRIMELINE.
