Detroit automakers’ vehicles snapped up six of the top 10 spots in a new study of how much value a new car or truck is likely to retain after five years.

Called the residual value, that figure is the key to getting a good value when owners sell or trade their vehicles.

"We predict the vehicles that will hold their value," Kelley Blue Book editor Matt Degen said.

KBB analysts estimate resale value with statistical models based on millions of transactions and considering a model's historic resale value, features, sales volume, economic conditions and other factors. Residual value is also used to determine monthly lease charges, but KBB's predictions are not involved in that.

The Tesla X electric SUV also made list, giving U.S. brands a stranglehold atop the report by vehicle shopping site KBB.com.

The average 2022 model vehicle will be worth 43% of its sticker price in five years, while the top 10 vehicles average 56%, according to KBB, which tracks the prices of new and used vehicles.

That means an average vehicle that cost $45,000 new at the end of 2021 will be worth $19,350, compared with an average of $25,200 for the top 10.

“Buying a car with great resale value takes the sting out of depreciation,” Degen said. “Sometimes a vehicle that’s more expensive now may cost you less in the long run.

”It’s savvy automotive financial planning.”

Kelley Blue Book has published its Residual Value Guide since 1981. The awards are 20 years old.

Trucks rule, cars drool

Trucks dominate, accounting for seven of the top 10 and validating the Detroit automakers’ decision to focus on pickups and SUVs.

Based on sales in January and February 2022, KBB predicts the 2022 models with the best resale values in five years will be, in alphabetical order:

  • Chevrolet Corvette

  • Ford F-series

  • Ford Maverick

  • Ford Ranger

  • GMC Sierra

  • Jeep Gladiator

  • Tesla X

  • Toyota 4Runner

  • Toyota Tacoma

  • Toyota Tundra

The top two brands for resale value were Toyota for mass-market vehicles and Lexus among luxury brands. KBB would not provide a list of the top 10 brands.

“The top 10 vehicles aren’t just smart purchases, they’re all good vehicles to own and drive,” Degen said. The shift toward trucks and SUVs was driven by consumer demand.

“We want to help shoppers to be smart financially. Don’t just buy for today’s price. Look down the road."

KBB also rated the top vehicle for resale price in many segments:

Maverick and Tundra score high

Surprises among the top vehicles include the 2022 Toyota Tundra full-size pickup. The Tundra is a small player in the red-hot pickup market, with annual sales less than a fifth of what Ford, GM or Ram's big pickups achieve, but Degen said the new 2022 raises its profile.

The 2022 Tundra was the No. 1 vehicle overall, projected to fetch 70.2% of its initial price in five years.

“That’s an astounding number,” Degen said. “The previous-generation Tundra held its value well, and the addition of a lot of new technology really helped resale value.”

The GMC Sierra 1500 pickup had the second highest residual value, at 60.8% of its original sticker price.

The Ford Maverick compact pickup, a new model for 2022, elbowed aside established vehicles for a spot in the top 10.

“The Maverick is a fantastic vehicle,” Degen said. “Demand is huge. People are waiting for months to get one. That plays a role in resale value.

“On top of that, the Maverick hybrid’s fuel economy will be really desirable in years to come.”

The EPA rated the Maverick hybrid at 40 mpg in city driving. The Maverick won the Free Press and North American Truck of the Year awards.

“Resale value doesn’t just matter to new vehicles,” Degen said. “Used-car buyers can be confident their vehicles will last and hold value, too.”
